    Yeah

    No

Shermer's main message seems to be that we should only form consensus beliefs as determined by government reports or mainstream media representations. Questioning such sources is verboten.

The premise of this book is very simple: human beings have a propensity to believe, and we use rationalization to defend our beliefs.

It also says the mind - and soul - and sense of self - is in fact nothing more than a chemical process. This may be true.

Unfortunately, the author falls victim to his own premise. His bias against all things not scientifically proven is littered with repetitive arguments, and like all believers, he does a good job of finding great defense for his position.

His arguments are littered with selected studies and anecdotal references. He often violates a basic journalistic standard by making up interviews with imaginary people and then, even when documenting actual discussions or arguments, gets the last word in without giving the other side a chance to rebut. This is the infamous "empty chair interview" which is unfair and unethical.

You can save yourself nearly 400 pages of reading if you simply read the last part of the sub-title: "How We Construct Beliefs and Reinforce Them as Truths."

    free will
    /ˌfrē ˈwil/
    noun
    noun: free will; noun: freewill
the power of acting without the constraint of necessity or fate; the ability to act at one's own discretion.

Free will is not the same as freedom of action. Freedom of action refers to things that prevent a willed action from being realized. For example, being in prison means you are not free to paint the town red. Being in a straitjacket means you are not free to wave hello.

No one has real free will. From birth you are programmed to think a certain way, by the time you are legally able to exercise alleged "free will" you've already been indoctrinated with more shit that a shit factory in Shitsville Tennessee. When you think you are exercising free will you are really just subconsciously running it by your well established internal "rule book" first.

This is absolutely meaningless/pointless. That's like saying the only way to have any free will is be a moron who makes decisions randomly based on nothing but your feelings and have no memory. Yall niggas have never read paradise lost

Maybe read is slower if you didn't get it?

There is no such thing as free will...pretending there is wont change that...the term "free will" is meaningless/pointless..it doesn't exist. From the moment you sucked on mommas tit you were exercising your instinctive programming...before you even have environmental programming...you were programed to suck on that titty.

It's a bit like "human rights" which also don't exist...you have zero rights to life, love or long walks on the beach.

Wow, this is really a sad way to go through life. Essentially a pre-programmed robot operating from a “well established internal rule book” with zero ability to think for yourself or apparently even recognize you’re not thinking for yourself. Who exactly programmed you?

Better yet, who “programmed” me? I grew up in the foster care system…spent time in no less than ten different households and two group homes moving around from school to school by the age of 18, “indoctrinated” by adults whose “rule books” were no more similar to each other than apples are to oranges.

I was pretty young when I realized that I never have to let someone else tell me how or what to think. Growing old is mandatory. Growing up is apparently optional for some. If we had to earn our age by thinking for ourselves at least once a year, based on your philosophy only a handful of people would reach adulthood.

Personally one of the most remarkable things about growing-up was looking back at something I thought I knew and finding out the truth of it was completely different from what some idiot had tried to teach me to believe. Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto.

I could ask you the same question…but all your thoughts are apparently regurgitation of someone else’s original thought

    It doesn’t

I'm asking because you said you realised you don't have to let someone else tell you how or what to think. Which doesn't make sense either because people can tell you what to think when you don't want them to. What I'm saying is that thought of yours was caused by your environment/influences, something outside of your control caused you to feel that way. It wasn't an original thought.
