They're assembling to take out Kyiv, but Putin is angry with the army and the militias who have been attacking Donetsk in the east, and he's going to take his time wiping them out before he moves into Kyiv.
For the Russians the war is the whole reason for the war. A chance to kill the Ukrainian army and the militias who have genuinely been brutalising Ethnic Russians. The war is not about taking territory, it's about revenge. -

The losses Russia would suffer losing that chain would be very demoralizing for them. -

You've been "consuming" too much American media my tanned friend. The war is already decided, the Russians will do whatever they want, have their way with old Ukraine, then leave, leaving a local puppet in charge.
It doesn't matter how many sanctions us soyim apply, or how many tanks are stolen with tractors, or how many conscripts get bush-whacked, the Red Army will win. They won against Nazi Germany, they will win against a sex-tourism and nuclear fallout theme park like Ukraine. -

Those 20 drones they have would be flying 24/7 just taking out the chain from the front (and back cutting off resupplies)…why is that not happening?

Not relevant to the 40 mile line.
If you took out that line then Kyiv would be safe for quite a while longer...Russias success would be much less guarnteed.
Battle of Britain is a good example of that...RAF outnumbered 11-1..beat off the German Luftwaffe..hilters preemptive strike at destroying the RAF and clearing the path for invasion of England.
Instead his air force got decimated and he abandoned plans to invade England because of it (and his lack of success at getting naval dominance too)...the underdog (England) prevented invasion at one battle. -

That's the whole point of drones
They can fly at 25k, very small so are not visible...unmanned...it's a line...you can start at the front/back and just pick it off as you work in...it is that easy...due to the weather/mud/snow/lack of fuel etc etc the middle ones are stuck in place. -
