makes sense I guess, Soviet military doctrine is to use artillery to strike deep into enemy territory to disrupt supply lines rather than to directly attack forces. Rostov is only like 30km from the contact line

LDNR intel units claim they've gotten a hold of the new ATO's battle plan. Dunno how accurate it is.

    Specifically:

    - they'll focus on three primary regions - DEBALTSEVO (primary goal), AZOV and LUHANSK
    - main goals are to obliterate military and civilian infrastructure (outposts, weapons depots, water treatment etc.)
    - the operation is meant to last FIVE days - THREE days to take the above regions, TWO days to push to the Russian border

You might want to quit being so full of yourself and think you know it all, because you don’t.

Wasn’t it you saying there was no way Russia was invading Ukrainian? Yes, you were. Guess what, you were and are wrong.

I know better than to simply repeat baseless and tired propaganda.

I am? Russia has invaded? Wow, must be the smallest and quietest invasion ever. Either that or it's only going on in Brandon's head and you're too dumb to question it.

What I've said is that Russia has no interest in invading, and the only two reasons they're going to get directly involved is if the US tries to host strategic weapons there or if the UAF tries to actively exterminate the people of the LDNR.

UAF appears to be in the early stages of a massive military operation to retake the Eastern regions

Duma's (Russian parliament) voted to recognise and protect the sovereignty of the breakaway republics, but I believe it's up to Putin to actually enact it. I don't see it happening unless the UAF breaks LDNR's lines (given how they got beaten back in 2014-2016 I don't think they'll be able to), at which point all bets are off and Russia will likely start firing standoff weapons.

So they're claiming they are protecting Ukraine and certain subgroups who live there by invading a country not their own?

what?? what will he decide to grab next? Poland

when the US ran that coup that toppled the government back in 2014, the Donetsk-Lughansk regions decided they were having none of it and tried to secede from the rest of the country. The Ukraine has been trying to beat them into submission ever since, and Russia has been supporting them but has stopped short of actually getting involved in the conflict.

the Minsk agreements were meant to create a dialogue between Kiev and the LDNR with the end goal being that they return to the Ukraine with some degree of autonomy, but the new Ukrainian government(s) have categorically refused to take any steps to implement them - the first and most important one being to draw heavy artillery and MLRS complexes from the contact line, instead thinking they can win this militarily.

Russia sees the people of LDNR as 'brothers' being bulldozed by an illegitimate government.

according to the Donetsk authorities artillery fire against them has doubled over the last day, ~600 rounds on the 19th vs ~1200 on the 20th

other regions are reporting a significant uptick in strikes too, but Donetsk-Debaltsevo appears to be the hardest hit

Which makes a lot of sense for anyone wondering. Donetsk, Luhanks and Crimea are majority ethnic Russian

Crimea was a special case. The Eastern regions have been wanting to join Russia for a while, but trying to absorb them would be very risky both politically and economically for Russia. Interestingly enough there is a LOT of domestic public and political support (largely due to the way they're being treated by the Ukrainian authorities), but it's Putin himself that's been refusing to act on it because he doesn't want to have to eat the cost of rehabilitating their infrastructure as well as the political fallout.

Russisan intervention will likely become inevitable if the next 'ATO' is successful though - that's what this thread is about, a massive new operation appears to be ramping up. If the UAF mounts enough of an offensive to break LDNR's lines, Putin will be forced to act by the Russian people. Many of the 'volunteer battalions' openly support the UPA and NSDAP and even the mainstream political apparatus talks about 'purging' and 'obliterating' Russian-speaking populations.

If/when this happens I expect it to be limited to standoff strikes to blunt the UAF offensive but it gets extremely unpredictable from there, depending on who gets involved and how.
