if you're starting from scratch though, I feel like it'd be much easier to build a simple gun than it would be to make reliable modern ammunition -

I can literally synthesize high explosives but i don't have the means to keep pressure under control to any precise measure. So the next best thing is scavenge some smokeless powder right. I can get my hands on 9mm blanks pretty easy though. The up side of those blanks is that they got primer already. The downside is that i have all these allegedly stolen nail gun rounds just laying about.
Seems like a waste not to at least try.
Blanks have primers but the brass is either crimped or bottlenecked or both. So fitting a proper sized projectile in one would not be possible or safe. -

What's the point, it's easy to make your own ammo without reverse engineering these. My ex father in law made his own ammo in the garage...you'd pretty much need the equipment regardless, the empty shells, the press, the gunpowder...the only thing you'd be saving is the gunpowder...but the headache of opening them all and collecting it would be more trouble than just buying it. -

a nail gun is lethal at 20 yards. i used to play with nail guns shooting various things, including several alliGAYtors. the nails literally bounced off the alliGAYtor. however. 1 nail out of maybe 50 or so wound impact what it was aimed at with the point-forward and penetrate about a half-inch deep into trees. that would kill a human.
a coworker was 'shot' with a nail gun and through his jacket it made him bleed.
now explain how something will penetrate 1/2 of steel but not be lethal. youre the dumbest nigger ever to fall off the apefrican continent.

i shoot 1/4" plate with copper .308 and it doesnt even dimple the front or bulge the back. it leaves a pretty copper splatter.
3/8" AR500 will stop every lead projectile with less than .300 WM energy
