These two statements do not follow from one another. Like you said, faster lethality. All viral evolution "cares" about is not killing you too fast. Viruses literally could not give a fuck less about killing beyond the extent to which it impacts their ability to spread. "Death" alone is an extremely weak selective pressure. It's like saying "humans evolved to not die of horrible diseases", which is kind of true... until you're old, at which point the selective pressure for not getting 80 kinds of cancer and dying from the common cold is basically non-existent because you've probably already busted all the nuts you were ever going to bust.
Smallpox was a menace for millennia until we eradicated it, and smallpox had like a 90% case fatality rate. Covid's CFR is like <2%. It has plenty of wiggle room, selective pressures wise, for getting lethal. If a virus *does* evolve to get less lethal that's lucky, but it's not like some universal trend resulting from selective pressures. -
