Nothing last forever. the human body is amazing. it is resilient. the only thing that could kill off the human race is a true act of God such as a giant ass flaming asteroid/comet. slamming into the planet and blacking out the sun for 10 years until all vegetation dies out. the rat population would increase 10 fold causing diseases to be spread. something would kill everyone while everyone is starving to death. their wont be enough shelf food or canned foods to feed everyone for 10 years. not enough ready-made military ration foods.
However a nuclear war (As bad as it will be) wont kill everyone off with burns and radiation poison. many people lived with radiation poisoning in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. only about 40 percent died from the toxic radiation in the first months. people slowly died over 2 years but a percentage of those lived to be old. not dying from cancer itself. something else. thyroid cancer is what people usually get as well as leukemia however leukemia such as CLL (That I currently have) is "Good cancer' which is what the island people got at the Atol testing sites in the pacific. That can take decades to kill a mother fucker off. Women lived for 30-40 years after being on the island with the ashes raining down. they thought it was snow at first but then they said it was like soap. and it lathered up and they were showering with the radioactive "soap" ash and all got thyroid cancer some weeks later. but lived for decades with it. it did cause TED (Thyroid Eye Disease) and caused many of them to get tired and gain weight. a lot of Polynesian women back then were not overweight. some got tumors and died but most lived.
I got to find the video about it. its really sad. The US Government purposly tested radiation effects on "Savage islanders" and even the Army film calls the guy from the Island a Savage. WTF it's 1950 not 1700s Captain Cook.

Thyroid cancer just eats the thyroid away. it can spread and will become aggresive but it usually killed people by spreading to their pancreas or liver. which can take 50 plus years. the 30 year old Officers in the US Navy who stood under the Atmosphere nuke just a few miles above. all got cancer but non died before the age of 67 with the rest dying in their 80s. So they got cancer from it but it took half a century. so An Atomic war isn't going to end life on earth unless it is a Nuclear winter.
and those Fires in Northern California. they fucking blocked out the sun for weeks. one took 2 months before the rain came and cleared out the sky. so yes, a Volcanic eruption or a ELE that killed off the dinosaurs is a real thing. smoke just drifts for up to years. and if it's hired then the storms are its not going anyways. takes years to settle to the ground.

So taking this part seriously (which would happen) you would have a massive food supply of human bodies dropping within a short period of time. Your own species mind you. Think of the mental meltdown or recoil effect you went to that degree to stay alive for another month or so.
but also know that your own species, when it dies, the bacteria that would kill you but your own immune system fights to keep you alive, will multiply exponentially and spread fast. going airborn. you get a massive load of some viral shit and you will get hit hard with sickness of many illnesses. -
