Posting restrictions by time and activity

  1. #1
This should make altmaking more annoying and cut down on spammers.

Here are two of the many ways to go about it:

    1. New accounts can only make 1 topic per day for their first week, post 10 comments/day for the first week.

    2. New accounts have to go through the toughest capchas you can get your hands on to make a new thread, and to comment.

You can also mix and match.

Should solve the spamflush and alt problem. We could also go all out like GameFAQs and create a userweb and a points system to restrict posting. But that's kind of gay and a pain in my balls, so not really needed.

What's a userweb and how does it restrict posting?

I think we just need to give one or two people "janitor" privileges, but make it so that they can only delete threads from (and maybe ban, if necessary) new accounts
The following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire!

Or maybe make it to where all new accounts can only post in a "new people" thread until Lanny manually approves them

It's a system to identify the alt accounts of multiple users and stop them from circumventing bans. It is also often called the usermap.

The exact internal workings are not known to the public but it is speculated (from outside "black box" testing) that it is very sophisticated and uses a bunch of different identifying markers to tie users together so unless you are absolutely perfect at separating your alt from your banned main account, you will get caught. They use stuff like your browser fingerprint, IP address matches, cookies (not just their own), the battery API (and supposedly a bunch of other stuff) to establish links between multiple accounts, some stronger and some weaker, and since they have some many different ways of making a connection, it is damn near impossible to circumvent in a way that isn't a giant pain in the ass.

Don't agree with #1. I've been here less than a week and I've already posted like 200 times. It would be gay as hell if I could only post 10 times a day. That would discourage new people from joining, and alienates old returning users from totse/zoklet.

The capcha to register and post threads would be fine though. Maybe not a REALLY tough one. Google made me do that shit twice in a row the other day just for doing a normal search and it got fucking annoying fast. Like each one took a full minute of clicking on street signs and mountains.

That sounds absolutely unnecessary and ridiculous.

I was just thinking about how it was like a year or year and a half here until a regular user got banned, I believe, and things were mostly fine. Then for whatever reason, and I have my own theories , things just changed and we've had to wade through a sea of shitposting looking for little islands of refuge. That's not to say I'm without fault. I'd just like to pinpoint what happened, like was it a shift in the moons or spectral casting a spell or what?

Also, I want to state that many of the suggestions I'm making these days are stuff that might make it less of a pain in the ass in the long run for Lanny to run this site, even if it's annoying to implement it right now.

For example, the topic of this thread is basically how to stop spammers and alts. This problem can functionally be solved by appointing "dalits" AKA mods. But it creates the potential for aboose (power trips etc), potential for community drama; whether or not a mod abooses their power, someone is gonna get butthurt and start shit. At the very least, people will simply have fundamental principle or philosophical differences on how mods should run their forums, and the need to manage these mods over the long term.
    (holy run on sentence, Batman)

If you can address the issues of running a forum and comunity systemically rather than through direct intervention, it generally increases the chances that it will last for a long time without the operator simply getting pissed off or upset and moving on, or simply not being willing or able to devote the time or effort to it.

I think it is completely unnecessary for this board but GameFAQs has thousands of users and literally hundreds of thousands of small communities (damn near every single game and console ever made has its own board; some are populated, some are not, some of these communities are big and some are not). As I said in the first post, it's unnecessary for this community.

    I understand.

Oh I almost forgot the other half of the equation in GameFAQs' case, this is probably more relevant to our situation; they have a system called "Karma". You can get a maximum of 1 karma point per 24 hours, by posting 1 comment on any message board. Karma is docked for every rule infringement, and hitting different thresholds gives you different levels, and up to a certain point, different posting privileges. This link has all the "karma levels" laid out:

    https://www.gamefaqs.com/help/18-board-basics

Basically, a brand spanking new user can create 1 topic and 10 posts per days, at a maximum of 3 posts per hour. After 10 usage days, the following 5 days, they will receive post count bumps by 1s and 10s respectively. Then at day 20, they get to post 10 topics and 100 posts/day, which is effectively infinite unless you're a serious nolifer or spammer, but still a limiter. From day 25 onwards, you are truly unrestricted.

The significance is that even if you perfectly dodge all their detection methods and make an undetected alt, it will still not be capable of posting unrestricted. It previously used to be even harsher and more limited, but it's still effective. Even if you "cultivate" accounts (some people used to do it) i.e. keep like 100 accounts that you post on 1 time per day to bring up their karma, if you fuck up even once and get detected then goodnight to all of them, and you HAVE to be active to get more karma, so they create more chances for you to fail, get lazy etc. It's basically not even worth it to spam on GameFAQs. Everybody just obeys the rules.

Good luck with that. I spoof user-agent, and other headers and can hide the fact that i am on TOR by using proxychains. I also have JavaScript and HTML5 elements disabled and it's trivial to delete cookies.

yeah a couple of people in different timezones get 'hide' privileges to hide threads, lanny gets a list and chooses whether to hard-delete them to prevent abuse seems like a good idea

bot spam actually isn't that common though; usually a wall of posts every few weeks

Fuck no. Are you retarded? Hahaha... Stop it with the rules. I can barely accept the report button that replaced the black cock button. Straight up down hill.

I remember a Greek saying that was something like "Peacetime is for building your walls".

Again, it is not necessary; worst case scenario, this site dies and we fuck off to another one. But perhaps it might stay alive longer if we fortify it in small pieces before the need ever arises for it to be defended. For long time users, this would basically not even be something to think about.

But it encourages following the rules, keeps repeat offenders out or at least raises the threshold for the effort required to keep being a faggot.
