2021-11-19 at 4:48 AM UTCyeah, focal point is tiny so you'd have to paint the target in exactly the right place to (safely, you don't want a nuclear missile detonating midair) disable it for long enough to burn through
on a projectile spazzing through the air at mach 20+
that is probably painted with a reflective coating that makes it even more difficult to heat -

did you read any more than the first paragraph
https://www.19fortyfive.com/2021/10/is-the-f-117-stealth-fighter-really-a-fighter-jet-afterall/The F-117 Nighthawk reached initial operating capability in 1983, meaning the platform was already flying some missions in the early 1980s. By 1988, the U.S. Air Force still hadn’t admitted that they had a stealth plane that could defeat enemy radar, opting instead to keep the advanced capabilities of the F-117 a secret. But secrets were hard to keep even in the era before smartphones, and whispers about the unusually shaped aircraft slowly but surely began to make their way to the public.
In 1988, the same year the Pentagon would first admit to having the F-117, images and conjecture about the aircraft had already led to a company releasing a video game about the classified aircraft
just because it hadn't been publicly acknowledged doesn't mean it wasn't already known -

I don't think detonating nukes is that big of an issue tbf. The explosive lens type nuclear devices require extremely precise timings. The outside layers are usually RDX so heat alone won't blow it up either, if you could get the energy in the first place them it would just burn instead and ruin its ability to detonate and create fission or fusion. -

I actually had/HAVE that video game F19 Stealth fighter on the Amiga...
besides getting the F designation wrong...here is what they *speculated* it looked like...
Not even close! lol
ETA: btw the game came out 5yrs AFTER the F117 had been flying missions...(not even including the years it was in testing etc)....5yrs operational and the best "guess" at what it looked like wasn't even close...though they got the color right..lolol.
Once it was made public the game company re-release the "updated" game.

Originally posted by aldra I guess anything's possible, but with our current understanding of physics a laser is not going to be an effective weapon unless you dump absurd amounts of power into it, and if we're able to deliver that much power to a portable anti-missile system it'd be better used elsewhere and it'd also make missiles that much more difficult to intercept
dont have to fry the entire missile, destroying the guidance system, sensors and fuse or any movement control parts will be just as good to render the missile inert.
have you tried burning security cams with high powered lazers ? -
2021-11-19 at 2:10 PM UTCThe Aurora has been speculated on for decades now...the feeling now though is that it was a myth...
"Aurora was a rumored mid-1980s American reconnaissance aircraft. There is no substantial evidence that it was ever built or flown and it has been termed a myth"
The "anti Gravity TR-3B is the newer "rumor"...
https://www.military.com/video/aircraft/military-aircraft/tr-3b-aurora-anti-gravity-spacecrafts/2860314511001
regardless of if it turns out to be real of fake the point is cutting edge technology isn't public knowledge...EVER...when it is made public that means there is something else that has superseded it already. -
2021-11-19 at 2:11 PM UTCThe F-117 was actually a bomber, they just called it a fighter cos it had such a shitty payload capacity. Looked cool, but in reality all stealth aircraft have been absolute dogs. But they just can't bring themselves to admit that. And they won't just kit out a commercial aircraft with bomb bays either - not cool enough, not expensive enough, not "military spec". That's why they still fly B52s, an aircraft out of the 1950s, in 2021.

Um no, the F117 was "spectacularly successful" in Gulf war 1.
"While both of the prototypes were destroyed, the Have Blue program was a stunning success. As such, the Air Force decided to go ahead with the development of the follow-on F-117. ... However, the F-117 performed spectacularly well over Iraq during the first Gulf War in 1991." -
2021-11-19 at 2:23 PM UTC"During the Gulf War in 1991, the F-117 flew approximately 1,300 sorties and scored direct hits on 1,600 high-value targets in Iraq over 6,905 flight hours".

Spectacularly well = it didn't crash.
When the F117 went up against serbs it didn't do well.

They always go on about how stealth planes have the radar cross section of a duck or whatever, as if that is some sort of camouflage. As if the people America murders and oppresses wouldn't know to shoot down the duck flying along at 37,000 feet at 500 miles per hour. -

No please post it along with the source...If military and independent aviation experts say the F117 was a very successful program I'm going to lean towards their opinion rather than random scrub on the Internets opinion
Active service from 1983 to 2008 with only 1 aircraft being shot down...that's a pretty good record. -

Lol...citing the *1* aircraft shot down in 25yrs = not a successful program huh...

You missed the point Shaquanda...if the primary system of a vehicle is as a glider..then it will be referred to as a glider...having a little 5hp outboard motor on it doesn't change it to a "powered vehicle" lololNo the primary use is a chicken coop now, plain and simple.
