Yes, the ABS brakes kick in more often as the tread is used up...but the wet test is better...as me old mum used to say.

    It’s called convenience

But seriously, why would you feel the need to point out that slick tyres give the most grip?

is it because theyre your favourite/lucky wheels or because you cant afford another set of wheels.

I've never looked into it, the winter tires were a gift, the gifter did not gift me rims.

that could be due to over inflation.

as the tires are getting thinner their pressure needs to be lowered so that they dont become pot-bellied.

It's not about dumbness..it's about availability and convenience. When I came to the good ol USA I insisted on having a manual transmission and scoffed at the idea of automatic.

..the problem is finding a manual transmission is pretty difficult when combined with your other requirements...993 out of 1000 cars sold here are autos.

I drove my first manual for 10yrs here but then when looking for my next car I gave up after a couple of months because I couldn't find one I liked in Manual....so I caved and got an automatic.

...that converted me though...You can basically go to sleep driving an automatic and being exceptionally lazy I like that. I'd never go back to manual transmission now. Even when I visit England I pay the $100 extra for Automatic transmission now on the rental.

Manual transmission is only good if you have a really small penis and are 19yrs old driving a 1995 Ford Escort Mk III and saying "REAL men drive manual"...when in fact a REAL man always goes the lazy route and doesn't try to impress Munters in the pub with their shitty old Mk III manual transmission.

Just the facts Ma'am, I bet you wear driving gloves too...

    Or
If I get a flat and the tread is pretty worn rather than pay $10 for a repair I'll buy a new (used) tire for $40.
    or
If I'm changing one tire out I also replace the other one (2 rears or 2 fronts at the same time).

I never buy new tires, you have to be pretty retarded to do so when you can get a barely used tire for 1/2 the price of a new one. 1/2 the price 80% of the tread.

Ya except there is a coded date on every tire and your probably buying tires with good tread but at the end or already past that date. That date is something all mechanics (a very good friend owns a big shop) told me not to play around with if you value your life. They dry rot and most of the time a dry rotted tire fails at high speeds and almost never fails at low speeds. The consequences are catastrophic.

I was going to bring that up to him but I knew he would be too cheap (poor) to do anything abut it.

Nah, My tires are generally new ones...just a few months old, the place I get them from is trustworthy to me and he's told me most of his used tires come from car wrecks/insurance right offs etc...of which Houston has no shortage.

Fresh rubber my lad for a fraction of the cost.

I haven't bought a new tire in over 15yrs or so

driving manual is about freedom. it sucks in a traffic and non traffic jams but its the ability to precisely inch your car forward and backward in a way that you cant with autos.

and feels comfortable and reassuring to have a stick to hold on to with my left hand while my right is busy turning and twisting the steering wheel at high and dangerous speeds.

of course they do. its in his, and his industrys' best interest for you to change your tires whenever theyre "expired".

otherwise what would happen to all the surplus tires in the storage.

but i bet when pressed, your "mechanic" friend couldnt produce clinical, peer-reviewed, non-industry-sponsored medical documents that prove conclusively that old, "expired" tires have higher chances of failing at high and dangerous speed.

press him and see what happens.
