A good bartender in a decent spot can make a great living. I knew plenty of them in Vega who did very well for themselves. I have a friend in VA who's wife has been a bartender at Dulles for over 30 years. She makes almost 90K/year.

When I was a regular drinker the barmaid where I used to go a lot (Baker's Street bar and Grill - now closed down) was making about 70k a year...she was only 22...and that was about 12yrs ago.

Plenty of less attractive bartenders make serious tips. When you are tending bar or dealing craps you have a short period of time to make a person feel important. You then wash, rinse, and repeat up and down the bar or around your end of the table making each customer feel important. That is all there is to it.
