2021-11-15 at 1:52 PM UTCDepends on the circumstances.
I don't go by the indicator. Usually when the outer rim are slick or near slick.
Or
If I get a flat and the tread is pretty worn rather than pay $10 for a repair I'll buy a new (used) tire for $40.
or
If I'm changing one tire out I also replace the other one (2 rears or 2 fronts at the same time).
I never buy new tires, you have to be pretty retarded to do so when you can get a barely used tire for 1/2 the price of a new one. 1/2 the price 80% of the tread. -

That does seem a little retarted. You can get a set of 4 rims for cheap at the used tire place or the breakers yard.
ETA: After market rims are cheap as chips. -

truth be told its the almost-slick tires that give the most grip. -

2021-11-15 at 3:58 PM UTCGoing back to the rims I remember paying $1200 like an idiot years ago for 1 wheel from the dealership after a g/f had destroyed it. I took it to the tire place to put a tire on it and was telling they guy how much I paid for the rim and he said "I could have sold you one for $100".
To double down on the dumbness I didn't even think about returning the $1200 rim and buying the $100 one off him. Clearly these were darker times as far as my intellect. -

this is normal.
this condition is due to oil thats condensed on the road/tire/brake disc surfaces. just be less aggressive in the first few minutes of the rain. -

There is a "sliding" scale of normalness...the slippage and skidding is less pronounced on a tire with full tread.
I don't need to look at my tire to know it's time to change it based on the slippiness...it's a bit like knowing if you need lube or not based on the age of the woman. -
