Again, how much testimony have you watched? DAs routinely overcharve for a few reasons. The most common reason is as revenue generation mechanism. Thye will overcharge knowing that the defendants will be more willing to accept a plea on a lesser charge without a trial. Thereby saving the state money by collecting fines and court costs without the expense of a trial.
Another reason is sort of tied to the previous one. By overcharging and accepting plea deals on lesser charves they pad thwir conviction record so they can tout it durinf their nwxt campaign for re-election.
In this case the DA has overcharged on purpose for the second reason because it is a high profile case if international interest. This gives his political career huge amounts of free publicity.
He also overcharged to quell the possibility of even more chaos, riots, looting, and possible loss of life had this initially been called what it is, self defense. In other words out of fear of the rioters. -

Rittenhouse killed Joseph Rosenbaum and Anthony Huber and wounded Gaige Grosskreutz during the demonstration in Kenosha in August 2020. His trial began Monday. Rittenhouse argues that he fired in self-defense after the men attacked him; prosecutors say he inserted himself into a volatile situation and that video from the plane will show he chased Rosenbaum.

Have you ever taken another humans life? We already know the answer so shut up it was rhetorical. It stays with you for the rest of your life. Sometimes even decades later you wake up in a cold sweat with it fresh in your mind. Even if it was combat or another kill or be killed scenario. He is 17 year old and barely had a year to process. To have to relive it under questioning where his life is in the balance for simply trying to protect himself from great bodily harm or even death (one of those shot had a gun pointed right at him when he pilled the trigger) is something that could even a seasoned combat veteran to have a sever emotional experience.
