   there's a pretty solid theory that it was intentionally written off
   
   it was actually the sister ship, the Olympia, which was catastrophically damaged when a naval ship crashed into it and refused to pay damages. the cost of rebuilding it would've destroyed the company so they rebadged it Titanic, gave it a fresh coat of paint and let it hit the iceberg. the thing they fucked up was they were too far out for a proper rescue; they hadn't planned for (so many) casualties
