in the movie Snowpiercer there's a scene where people describe cutting their arms and/or legs off and eating them in order to survive when they were locked in and starving

I read a bit about it at the time and the general consensus was that it wouldn't help; you'd lose more to blood loss, stress and shock.

I wonder if it'd work if the wound was immediately cauterised or tournaquet'd
