in the early years of Cable internet people were fighting neighbors because someone was hogging bandwith. bandwith used to be expensive and suddenly became a running tap. like having a slow filling well of water going to a pipeline from public water. people used to guard over the amount of water being wasted and suddenly there is this virtual unlimited source of water. same with bandwith.

they knew the internet was a great invention but would also take away that specialness of social communication between boarders. it also was a gateway to losing our freedoms. laws being changed because of "Trolling" went from playful to getting people to suicide or being murdered. and just as a way for the big brother to use each other to brother for them. 1984 fear to that of a Brave New World where using social engineering in campaign ads to make everyone turn into a snitch and a karen and the village is the parent over singular parenting skills.

i get that but then youd be left with just 20 aging, disgruntled reclusive nerds and the community will have decayed and dried up. you need new, young nerds to continue the culture and for that you gotta stay ahead of the game. did your parents bitch about your BBS because they were out of touch? dont become a close minded hypocrite.

The '80s and '90s, no long distance charges. We used a program called HyperTerminal. You could also set up a "shotgun", with two identical US Robotics 33.6 modems for extra speed, if you had the motherboard slots to accommodate.

Maybe in Canada they didn't charge for some time. I understand it uses the older pulse that telegraph used. this is why it's AT&T in the USA. Telegraph and Telephone. and I was using it in the 1990s. even though I was in the same city which was a local call to Walnut Creek the first few years, they suddenly moved the toll line and I started getting charged for &Totse and was on it a lot. I remember that wifey meltdown screaming at me and me saying WTF showing me the fucking bill.. it never charged before she explained they moved the toll-line border. whatever it was called. luckily dsl came out not long after then cable eventually. but I had been kicked off from &Totse by then along with Digital Avatar. I got booted off because of his ass though I found a 2005 rant of his saying I got him kicked off. we were the first to get booted off. then I typed in totse.com just one day just as he was moving files onto it and closing down the dialup. him coming into chat box with me playing his game of "how fast or how long you ask if it's a real person"

this is how I communicated with Jeff in real time via RTT. and this eventually a couple years later would be me being kicked off of totse.com because of 9/11 and bitching at him and him telling me feds were there hauling shit off. then the blacklist statement he would do to me if I talk about it.

this may seem off topic but its not. I love how Jeff Hunter preaches Full Transparency yet he is unwilling to be fully transparent about this.

The way to avoid that was to "bounce" between toll areas. Remember, Totse started off with phreaking as the central focus of knowledge. What you'd do is initially Telnet into a BBS within your own toll area, preferably on the fringe, and then you would TelNet from that BBS across the toll line, which wouldn't trip the meter as long distance. You kept a private list of your "path" of BBS sites you would use to bump your way over to the desired terminal. If you didn't trek properly, you would get toll charges.

NirvanaNET was a takeoff from this practice.

So you would remember digital avatar and greenspam

and when I used greenspam as my logon on totse.com, Jeff warned me that I wasn't wanted. He didn't care as long as I behaved but of course I got shut down. came back pretending to be a female using witch in my new users name right after having my Greenspam account shut down.

it was always a bunch of fucking nerds and their power trip on there. it started off you wouldn't get booted for anything unless you scrolled or spammed the board. but you would just get disconnected. on totse.com he created the 62 second rule. you couldn't post again for 62 seconds (though Im sure this was given to a certain group of users with security rules in check given to their accounts)

this stopped the spamming up the bbs. then photos were restricted when people started posting CP or gore or linking copyright material.

totse claimed it had a Million unique users at one time. if true, shitloads of people came across the thread however most people lurked. the few pages I saved from totse on waybackmachine before being removed were watered down from the actual conversations those days. and since then, many have popped back up. which is interesting because I spoke with a guy out front of archive who told me "you know, the sysop can request his pages be removed'. I thought the whole purpose of archive was to prevent this. it's seedy af.

Kids would get bored and start Googling how to do taboo things, Totse was usually the site that came up first because it allowed the sharing of information on taboo subjects, they'd join, get fucking dragged for asking stupid questions, some would stay, some would leave.

Anyway, sites like Totse exist still. If you think about it Totse didn't even have that many members. Maybe like 30,000 or so active at any given time. People are growing tired of mainstream media controlled by advertisers and will soon start seeking out places they can be vulgar and call each other faggots and get girls to write their username on their pussy.

Adler does state that computer crimes do exist, particularly in the distribution of pornography to minors

LOL, so a kid blowing himself and his house up from incorrectly constructing explosives is just a secondary concern barely worth mentioning, what we really need to be concerned about is that a kid MIGHT SEE A PICTURE OF A TIT.

    OH MY THE HORROR!

if it is that subjective, whats the point of speculating? explosives are OBJECTIVELY dangerous, an image of a natural human being isnt, that is fucking retarded and an easy mark of a repressed, damaged fool.

i declare your unreadable username to be obscene and damaging, now what?

How do we verify if we're damaged? How do we measure ourselves?
