I think the idea here is that the intended audience is not going to try solving it, they're just going to instantly recognize the constituent formulae and the values they represent and get the joke. It's probably only brainlets like us who see that and immediately think it's some inscrutable formula that one is intended to solve. -

Yeah I agree.
The way some people assume "well, you should know what n is, you should know what P is, you should know what E is", etc, is shitty and pseudo intellectual as fuck. All those things mean different things depending on the context, those are all context dependent. "Oh, but muh R can only mean one thing" no it can't. R isn't a fucking thing. All physics forumulas should define terms underneath, that they don't is only due to sheer laziness and sloppiness. -

It could be their therapy place when theyre angry at their parents or something to run to and when they want to rebel against their parents or school etc. through the art of fucking.
This is exactly why you'd never get to pull this off.

I just saw a "P", an "R" and a "V" and saw "PERVERT".

2021-10-01 at 10:46 PM UTCYah dude this sounds totally legit u should post the address here and let us know when you’ll have some of these “barely legal by EU standards” teens over.
You would for sure be cool as fuck if you did this man for sure -

The person wearing the shirt is definitely signaling intellect, and a t-shirt isn't a particularly costly signal so... yeah. Odds are not great that the person wearing it is actually an intellectual.
I don't think it's particularly pseudointellectual conceptually though. Like, the guy who came up with the joke probably wasn't pseudo. And if the person on the receiving end of that signal understands the shirt without having "cheated" like we did, that's a very costly (in terms of time investment/familiarity with the subject matter) display of genuine intellect. Any idiot can wear the shirt, but it's likely only an intellectual is going to read "PV/nR" as "T". -
2021-10-01 at 10:58 PM UTCWho the fuck remembers the ideal gas law? Much less actually uses it?
So basically the joke is M.I.T. So mass by imaginary number by the temperature, without any of those terms or the terms leading up to their derivation being defined at all.
There's not even a marker between each term. It's all just so annoying.
My job right now is mostly making other people's work accessible to others.
OK, you went to MIT, and you don't feel like explaining your work to the rest of us. So you are overpaid, so either do a training session to explain your shit or fuck off.
Everyone does the training session. Then we have to catch up with the guys who just didn't get it. Oy. -

Hahaha, I mean... that's the thing, right? Students at MIT probably remember/have an intuitive understanding of mass energy equivalency, imaginary numbers, and ideal gas law. Because they're using those in class. Because they're scientists-to-be/smart people. To them, this is an in-joke. It's only when we stupids start repeating their very genuinely smart person in-jokes as some kind of intellect-based cargo cult that it becomes pseudo. 🤔 -

Yeah we dumb people can ever only understand the smart people secondhand and so....WAIT WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU? THEY NEED TO EXPLAIN THEIR INPUTS AND RESULTS ADEQUATELY. IF THEY DON'T THEN FUCK THEM.
THEY NEED TO BE ABLE TO PROVE THEIR ASSERTIONS AND THEIR RESULTS WHEN CHALLENGED, AND IF THEY DON'T THEN FUCK THEM.
It's all not some sort of optional step, it's not some edgy bullshit, it's basic protocol. Prove your assertions, prove your logic, or stop wasting our scarce time.

what a shit topic, it is taught so wrong. Just shit, from start to almost finish. -

But these formulae are just tools. It's like getting mad at a carpenter wearing a shirt like this:
Because it doesn't explain what the hammers and nails are for. Like, they're for joining wood. You don't actually need to know that. You just need to know what a hammer is, and what nails are. And if you don't? I can see why you'd get upset, that's pretty embarrassing, but it's definitely a failing on your end no matter how much you protest. And ultimately, the failing is meaningless. All that happens if you don't understand this shirt is that you don't understand this shirt. Maybe scientists should be less opaque generally, but it's a fucking shirt. -
2021-10-01 at 11:40 PM UTCYou wouldn't get mad at the carpenter though because there's no status envy. Carpenters are low status. Carpenters joking about their tools in a way you might not understand breeds no enmity. Scientists though? High status. It irks you because it reminds you that you're (relatively) low status.
