no its about why you choose your music. if you only listen to rap because you figure thats what all the cool kids are listening to, then you're a retard. if you listen to it coz you actually like that shit then fair enough i guess.

that doesn't have anything to do with what i said about godspeed being shitty but ok.

On what conceivable metric is godspeed "close to the bottom"? Especially when you seem to think alt-j is good art lol.

alt j has solid songwriting dude. which is something godspeed can't say for themselves.

godspeed is pretty close to the bottom in the sense that very little of what they make could actually be considered music. its more like an attempt to make some sort of avant garde high art out of one of those 99 cent halloween atmospheric noise cd's they used to sell in those halloween stores that pop up a couple months before october

"good songwriting" is broader than gluing two courses and two verses together with an intro, bridge, and outro bro. I have no problem with alt-j, but their music is kinda formulaic. Not that that's a criticism, a lot of music I like is formulaic, some explicitly so (generative music, bedroom pop, pop/satire). But that doesn't mean doing something different is automatically bad.

Lol, godspeed isn't even avant-garde. If you think GY!BE pushes the boundary on what we can call music you need to listen to broaden your horizons. Look at like Peter Sotos as someone who releases recordings, the primary artistic value of which is to pose a question about what we can consider art.

i mean, whatever, i didn't claim they were the greatest band in the universe, it was just the first decent band that popped into my head.

also for your second comment, i'm not well versed in the academic side of philosophy and logic but i'm pretty sure that's got to be some sort of fallacy/distraction technique. i said their music is like an attempt at trying to create something avant garde. the point still stands regardless of how broad my horizons are. you're attempting to get me to argue the fact that my level of exposure to music is sufficient enough to be able to classify something as avant garde, when really it has no bearing on my point at all.

i'd still argue that it attempts to "push the boundary" of what we call music, because very little of it as actually music. like there is some sort of line that gets crossed somewhere where you go from just having sound to having music.

OK, so then what about trying to be avant garde (an accusation you seem to have made) supports the proposition that "godspeed is near the bottom [of some hierarchy of music?]"?

i'd still argue that it attempts to "push the boundary" of what we call music, because very little of it as actually music.

So tell us then what is the demarcation criteria for music? What essential qualities does a thing need to have to be music which the recordings of GY!BE don't possess.

well you said "i dont know anyone cool who listens to it". that seems like you are dismissing it simply because none of the 'cool crowd' like it.

thats not really a reason to dismiss music coz as you said, music is subjective.
