Yeah, like when the homeless guy has fallen asleep due to exhaustion, and the police come and laugh at him and tell him it is against the law to sleep there, that nigga should just know better. He should just get his shit together, get a real job, and stop bothering everyone and breaking the laws by sleeping on the street. The opportunity in this country is fucking amazing. Anybody can work a job and go to school if they went you. I'm not saying it doesn't come with debt or that its easy, but so many people do it. It not being easy is why most don't. I really don't think most Americans have a sense for actual poverty and actual struggle.
If you live in basically any western country you've pretty much won the lottery.
Again tho, I'm not saying some cops aren't assholes. But there are assholes everywhere. These are just assholes with power. -

The police are just doing their job. People say american basketball niggers and brownies get picked on, but they're the ones in poverty, so why WOULDN'T their statistics be higher? Cops know these areas have a lot of people committing crimes. You can't blame it on them. It's so fucking dumb. All these BLM protestors but nobody is fighting for any real legislation that could actually change lives. You have potheads screaming LEGALIZE IT without seeing the deeper problem that is the drug war.
If we got rid of that what would people be getting in the cycle for? Broken tail light? Unpaid traffic ticket? Like fuck. Most people are smart enough to allocate their resources enough to take care of that shit. But the drugs, it's a much different beast. -

You know what those kids have? Food stamps. Food banks. Public education. And when they grow up they can get angry and even do something about it, and go to college and get a better job and get the fuck out of Alabama.
Have you ever been to a slum? Like a legit, real slum? There is no getting out of that. You can't just take a big loan so that you can go to school. You can't even take the time to go to school because you're working 70 or 80 hours a week selling peanuts and coconut water on the side of the road, just trying to get by.
One day you cut your leg by accident and in a week its red and purple and feels like your skin is bursting because it's gotten infected and your home is fucking filthy. Not because you don't clean it, but because everything is filthy. You pour some of your brother's vodka on it because you can't afford to buy isoproyl, and you sure can't afford antibiotics.
THATS real poverty. Poverty in the US is by comparison, pretty fucking cushy. -

I certainly agree that the heart of the issue is systemic, I agree our politicians hold more responsibility for the perpetuation of poverty than the police but even they can claim the same defense. The politician elected by the middle class or whose campaign is supported by the upper advancing the perceived and actual interests of those groups, respectively, and at the cost of the third, really is just doing their job. Our political representation is also a product of their environment, the enduring model of economic responsibility that has been favored in intellectual and popular thought in the US since our inception as a nation.
Also worth pointing out this is the nuremberg defense, yes the police are just doing their job but if their job entails inflicting injustice it seems reasonable that even the beat cop owns at least some minor portion of responsibility for the greater effects of the system they are but a part of.If we got rid of that what would people be getting in the cycle for? I agree drugs are probably one of the biggest places where poverty is perpetuated, but it's not the only one. The lower class is also the major place property crimes and assault convictions occur. And to reiterate, I'm only talking about the actuality of economic disadvantage, not the normative claim about whether or not it represents justified punitive action. Convictions for these sorts of crimes does represent a tremendous economic disadvantage, and are highly localized to the lower class. -
