The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new data that showed how well the COVID-19 vaccines protect people from the coronavirus, specifically the delta variant.

How many vaccinated people got COVID-19 recently?

The study reviewed how COVID-19 spread from April 4 to July 17, which was when the delta variant becomes prominent among 13 states in the U.S.

Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Indiana, Los Angeles County (California), Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York City (New York), North Carolina, Seattle/King County (Washington) and Utah.

Here’s a breakdown of the COVID-19 numbers for those states:

    Not fully vaccinated: 569,142 (92%) COVID-19 cases, 34,972 (92%) hospitalizations and 6,132 (91%) COVID-19–associated deaths.

    Vaccinated people: 46,312 (8%) cases, 2,976 (8%) hospitalizations and 616 (9%) deaths.

The study said that during the specific time frame of April 4–June 19, fully vaccinated people accounted for 5% of total COVID-19 cases, 7% of COVID-19 hospitalizations and 8% of deaths overall.

These percentages were higher during June 20 to July 17 time frame, when fully vaccinated people accounted for 18% of cases, 14% of hospitalizations and 16% of deaths, per the CDC.

Does this mean the vaccine works?

This is about in line with expectations. According to the CDC, the 13 jurisdictions had a 37% vaccination rate. So the CDC expected fully vaccinated people to represent 6% of cases (which is close to the 5% observed) when vaccine efficacy is at 90%.

However, from June 20 to July 17, the CDC expected fully vaccinated people to represent 10% of cases — not 18%. The 18% number would have been expected if vaccine efficacy was at 80%.

The CDC said that the new study suggests people not fully vaccinated had five times higher chance of infection, 10 times higher chance of hospitalization and more than 10 times higher chance of death from COVID-19.

Earlier this week, the CDC said there were 12,908 severe COVID-19 breakthrough cases among fully vaccinated people, which resulted in hospitalization or death, according to CNN. Of course, 173 million people in the U.S. have been fully vaccinated against the novel coronavirus.

Per CNN, these numbers suggest you have about a 1 in 13,000 chance of having a severe breakthrough cases of COVID-19 when you’re fully vaccinated.

My cats are picky cunts. I have to change the catfood up at least once a week and not just individual flavors but also brands. Been doing multi-meat cocktail lately but also chicken liver and shrimps. They like the ones with lots of gelatine and little junks in it the most but I assume those would make the bread real soggy .

QAnon guru dies from COVID-19 as her followers harass hospital staff
    Mikael Thalen

Veronica Wolski, a prominent supporter of the QAnon conspiracy theory, died on Monday after a weeks-long battle with COVID-19.

Best known for hanging conspiratorial banners from a bridge in Chicago, Wolski passed away at the Amita Health Resurrection Medical Center after succumbing to the deadly disease.

Wolski's death was first announced on Telegram by disgraced attorney Lin Wood, a major figure in the QAnon movement as well as an advocate for debunked election fraud claims.

"I have just learned that Veronica Wolski saw the face of God this morning at 12:44 a.m.," Wood wrote.

Wolski had spurred a widespread harassment campaign against healthcare workers just days prior after conspiracy theorists began demanding that she be treated with Ivermectin, an anti-parasite drug that right-wing individuals falsely believe cures COVID.

Wood even filmed himself the day before Wolski's death calling the hospital and threatening staff with murder charges unless the QAnon supporter was given Ivermectin.

In other statements on Telegram, Wood called on his more than 800,000 followers to "ensure that these medical murders stop NOW and the perpetrators be brought to justice."

"Veronica will be on her bridge in Heaven looking down on us," Wood said. "We must do our best to make sure Veronica did not leave this Earth in vain."

As noted by Newsweek, other prominent QAnon figures such as fellow attorney Sidney Powell and former national security adviser Michael Flynn also encouraged their followers to bombard the hospital with calls.

Wolski is just the latest in a growing number of anti-vax conspiracy theorists who have died from COVID. Just last month ex-CIA officer turned QAnon promoter Robert David Steele died from COVID after repeatedly referring to the virus as a "hoax."

Kimmel Wishes Antivaxxers Would Stop: 'Never Take Medical Advice From Anyone With Abs'
    Ross A. Lincoln

Jimmy Kimmel covered a lot of topics in his monologue on Monday's episode of "Jimmy Kimmel Live," but he spent particular time talking about something that annoys him that probably annoys most of his viewers: People who use their influence to spread lies about vaccines and COVID-19.

While he was on the subject he noted that there are clear ties between the rate of deaths from COVID and politics, but that the problem of misinformation isn't entirely a problem on America's political right.

The bit started when Kimmel talked about President Joe Biden's visit to California Monday to campaign against the attempt to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom. "Being President is not a fun job right now. Climate change, murder hornets – and, of course, the relentlessly-maddening fact that Joe Biden has to ask people – to take a lifesaving vaccine," he said.

"It's like if we were skydiving and he had to convince us to open our parachutes. It is ridiculous," Kimmel said. "But this is an interesting statistic: Covid deaths – have proven to be much higher – in states that voted for Trump."

Just a quick aside, this is, unfortunately, absolutely true. States led by Republicans absolutely have terrible rates of illness and death relative to states that aren't, with Florida in particular accounting for 20% of all U.S. COVID deaths since the delta variant surge began in June.

"But it's not just the right wingnuts who are smarter than science," Kimmel continued. "Lots of the Lulemon crowd is opting out too. These "Wellness" influencers – some with big followings – are spreading dangerous misinformation."

This, sadly, is also true, for instance influencer named Evie Kevish, who frequently shares vaccine misinformation on her social media feeds, according to the Washington Post.

Kevish, Kimmel noted, "calls herself a 'certified juice therapist,'" and once :wore a shirt that says 'VACCINES ARE POISON.' Take it from me – a certified juice therapist – vaccines…"

"Where do you get certified for Juice? 'That's right I have a Masters degree from the University of Jamba?," Kimmel continued. "It's so nuts. Imagine if you have - let's say your testicles inflate to the size of a volleyball. It happens. Mostly to men. And now you need to see somebody about it. Who do you go to? A urologist? Or yogachick95, Your "wellness" consultant?"

"Here's a good rule of thumb: never take medical advice from anyone with abs," Kimmel added. "Or from someone who wears natural deodorant. I've smelled how good that stuff works, and guess what? It doesn't."
