Everyone is an idiot about knives on this page, someone very close to me has been a retail meat cutter and butcher their whole life and I have collected folding pocket knives since I was a child..

I stopped carrying knifes because the police kept stealing them from me. They don't care that your gravity chinese folding pocket micro inch blade is technically legal, they will just take any knife from you. If you say anything they will go through your phone looking for drug activity
walking around with a knife is a heat score, any cop worth his salt will see it and take it at least where i'm from.
i'm more privy to the improvised weapons and hiding metal pipes in bushes all over my neighborhood so if someone tries me I run them deeper into the block and grab my pipe.

spyderco is good
crkt is good if you're on a budget, I'd put BOKER around the same level
for US-made I like ZT; some cool shit without being as overpriced as shit like Strider and Hinderer and not quite as OPERATOR TACTICOOL
for high end materials and value for money you can't go past the major Chinese ones - Kizer, WE/CIVIVI and MAXACE among others

walking around at odd hours getting stopped and searched. Lots of people carry knives in my area there was even a story in the paper about it and they asked people why and everyone does it to feel safe and there are some real nutters out there.
I have never heard of anyone using it to defend themselves. The people that walk around with knifes here are the types that will stab you in the neck as you walk out of a store because they are mentally ill

Steel pipes are good. Around here we could carry swords if we wanted. I sometimes see people with these huge hunting knives on their belt instead of a pistol. Apparently its legal as long as your knife isnt hidden.
Steel pipes are, you can also turn them into giant deadly capacitors with an insulated handle, so if any tries to grab it from you they get fried. You can adjust the voltage to be less than lethal, or lethal.
