Does Nuclear Family mean the generation that raised boomers? pre-boomers?

Atomic Bomb Shelters put in back yards. I would love to find a 1950s A-Frame classic in California I could find in a nice nieghborhood and discover a bomb shelter in the back yard that wasn't in the open house brochure. they're like 600 square feet of office space. they would make a great office and podcast room. a place for pops to get away from the wife and kids too. bring the dog down with you of course. and a jar of peanut butter

a nuclear family means a mom, dad and kids, nothing to do with boomers or non boomers.

I dont think that's the definition. it was a family during the cold war. when you "ducked and cover" and tommy the turtle was your friend and showed you how. duck, cover and kiss your ass goodbye

The term nuclear family first appeared in the early 20th century. Merriam-Webster dates the term back to 1924,[7] while the Oxford English Dictionary has a reference to the term from 1925; thus it is relatively new. While the phrase dates approximately from the Atomic Age, the term "nuclear" is not used here in the context of nuclear warfare, nuclear power, nuclear fission or nuclear fusion; rather, it arises from a more general use of the noun nucleus, itself originating in the Latin nux, meaning "nut", i.e. the core of something – thus, the nuclear family refers to all members of the family being part of the same core rather than directly to atomic weapons.

so, it came to being used between 1945-1950 (if you continue down the definitions)

In a way, It is correct that it's regarding a family during cold war era. this is why it's called "Nuclear Family" when traditional specific rolls of a Father goes to work, Mother stays home and takes car of the kids. an "Idea family structure"

    but Cold War still applies.

This phrase became a defining characteristic of second wave feminism at a time when women and others challenged the institutions of marriage, the nuclear family and its values and state control of women’s reproductive rights.

How funny because it stated 1945-1950

    "ORIGIN OF NUCLEAR FAMILY
    First recorded in 1945–50"

    based on your own link.

if it was in the dictionary in 1924, that means it was already in wide usage. the nuclear family has been the standard for centuries so there was no need for a special word for it until it started being challenged and 1945-1950 sounds like when that started.

    Fair enough.

However it could have been recycled for use as a sort of double entendre because it was the cold war and lots of nuclear weapon testing or could have been coined this without knowing the original origin of the term.

No offense but I’d rather date my Aunt than you.
