Right-wing media keeps trying to force easily-debunked Biden scandals instead of focusing on actual policy

President Joe Biden continues to prove difficult for Republicans to attack.
Several recent purported scandals that dominated right-wing media have been easily debunked.
Attacks on Biden are not sticking like they did for Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton.
Ever since the 2020 campaign, Republicans have struggled to land the same kinds of attacks on Joe Biden that worked on Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.
In recent weeks, a series of purported scandals have bubbled up in the conservative media ecosystem only to be quickly washed away.
President Biden's age, race, and gender all insulate him from the kinds of caricatures that Obama and Clinton found themselves portrayed under.
Disciplined messaging from the White House and limited opportunities for Biden to speak extemporaneously have left a vacuum to be filled.
From "Hidin' Biden" to a burger ban
As Insider's John Dorman recently reported, Republicans have admitted they are having a hard time landing attacks on Biden, who enjoys healthy approval ratings as he moves past the 100 day mark of his presidency.
Although there have been plenty of policy proposals, legislation, and executive orders for Republican to seize upon, most of the action in conservative media has centered around culture war outrage stories.
Because Biden has been limited yet strategic in his public appearances, his longstanding penchant for gaffes has not been as much of a problem as some pundits imagined. Unlike during the Trump administration, Biden White House staffers have largely steered clear of leaks and the public infighting that consumed so much of Trump's orbit, as Politico reported last week.
Filling that gap, three easily debunked stories made their way last week from the conservative blogosphere to Fox News.
The first ended with Fox News later correcting a segment on Biden limiting red-meat consumption, which he has no plans to do.
The other two were false stories about Vice President Kamala Harris' children's book being put in "welcome packs" for migrant children at a Department of Health and Human Services shelter in Long Beach, California, and the other was about Virginia eliminating advanced math courses to promote "equity," even though the state wasn't eliminating any advanced classes for kids.
Republican attacks on Biden during the campaign were similarly unsuccessful.
Former President Donald Trump popularized the "Hidin' Biden" nickname, which he pivoted to during Biden's so-called basement campaign amid the pandemic. "Sleepy Joe" didn't quite have the same ring to it as "Crooked Hillary."
Then came the cognitive decline attacks, which backfired by setting expectations inordinately low for any Biden public speaking appearance.
Last Friday, both Fox News and the Fox Business network featured stories on Biden struggling to find his mask at a recent event in Georgia, marking one of the only returns to the cognitive decline line of attack since the debates.
The fact that Biden - a Washington veteran of more than four decades - has been able to keep all of these purported scandals from sticking to him says less about his record than where Republicans are looking.
Cancel culture wars are at the center of the conversation on the right as policy takes a backseat.
Biden has taken heat from across political ideologies on his handling of immigration and refugees seeking asylum, but his low support among voters on immigration has not bled too far into his overall approval ratings yet.
Somewhat ironically, the same week all of these debunked scandals were coming from conservative media many prominent Republicans were at an actual policy retreat in Florida.
For a president looking to enact a sweeping agenda and keep the drama to a minimum, Biden's ability to keep these stories from sticking not only saves him time, but also reveals what a precarious place the GOP has found itself in with messaging post-Trump.

Lincoln Project taunts Trump for losing to ‘the swamp’ in Fox ad buy

The Lincoln Project insists the "swamp" defeated former President Donald Trump — and wants him to hear it on familiar airwaves.
The anti-Trump group released an ad on Monday taunting the former president for getting "played" by the Republican establishment, naming in particular Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
"The swamp won, Donald," a narrator says over a supercut of images of alliGAYtors, McConnell, and Trump. "Mitch McConnell's Washington consultants are making big money using your name. We don't know if Mitch gets a cut, but what do you think, Donald?"

The ad, which is scheduled to air on Fox News and Fox Business News in Palm Beach, Florida, where Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort is located, informs Trump he is getting "played."
"[McConnell] is picking candidates loyal to him ... and you fell for it," the narrator continues while noting the former president has "little hands." "They're laughing at you."
The narrator then suggests Trump shouldn't run again because "maybe the power Mitch McConnell has over the GOP is just too much for" him.
"Maybe what McConnell and the rest of Washington is saying is true: that Trump is done," he concludes.
A growing rift within the GOP is pitting the pro-Trump wing and the more traditional Republican establishment against each other.
Party leaders such as McConnell and Rep. Liz Cheney have sought to minimize Trump's influence ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.
On Monday, Cheney tweeted that anyone who claims the 2020 presidential election was stolen is "spreading THE BIG LIE," just days after calling Trump's claim that she might not seek a fourth term in office due to low poll numbers and primary threats "wishful thinking." The Wyoming Republican has even said she would not support Trump if he earns the 2024 Republican nomination for president.
McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, has also distanced himself from the former president, previously saying he hoped never to talk to him again shortly after President Joe Biden was sworn in on Jan. 20.
Trump, who has enjoyed enduring popularity within the Republican base since he left office, has vowed to remain an active figure in GOP politics. The former president has released dozens of endorsements for candidates for office, many of them, such as Max Miller in Ohio, primary challengers to incumbents who supported Trump's impeachment earlier this year. Trump also endorsed Frank Eathorne, a primary challenger to Cheney, whom he called "incompetent."
The Senate minority leader has supported incumbent Republicans, and a McConnell-aligned super PAC even backed Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who drew Trump's ire after voting to convict him on the impeachment charge of inciting an insurrection.
McConnell, unlike Cheney, has said he would "absolutely" back Trump if he were the 2024 GOP presidential nominee.
Trump was impeached on the charge of inciting an insurrection in connection to the Jan. 6 Capitol Hill siege. Ten House Republicans voted to impeach Trump, and seven GOP senators voted in favor of conviction. However, Trump was acquitted by the then-GOP-led Senate.
Trump was previously impeached on two Ukraine-related charges in 2019 before being acquitted in the Senate.

Ohio Republican Rep. Anthony Gonzalez hasn't been in Washington long, but he's been there long enough to understand his party is rotting from the inside out.
Asked by The Hill newspaper about efforts to remove Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney from Republican Party leadership because of her vote to impeach former President Donald Trump, here's what Gonzalez said:
"If a prerequisite for leading our conference is continuing to lie to our voters, then Liz is not the best fit. Liz isn't going to lie to people. Liz is going to say what she believes. She's going to stand on principle. And if that's going to be distracting for folks, she's not the best fit. I wish that weren't the case."
Uh, wow.
Just to reiterate: This is a REPUBLICAN member of Congress elected in 2018 in the heart of the Trump era who is saying publicly that many in his party continue to lie to voters, while Cheney does not.
(Worth noting: Gonzalez and Cheney were two of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump for his role in inciting the January 6 riot at the US Capitol.)
Now, Gonzalez didn't make clear what he believes Republicans are lying about, but it's pretty obvious that he's talking about the Big Lie -- the one Trump and his allies are pushing that the 2020 election was somehow fraudulent or stolen despite no proof or even evidence to back up that claim.
"The Fraudulent Presidential Election of 2020 will be, from this day forth, known as THE BIG LIE!" said that former President in a statement on Monday morning -- apropos of, seemingly, nothing.
What Gonzalez's quote lays bare is that admission to the current Republican Party is predicated on whether or not you believe a lie about the 2020 election.
If you say the election was stolen, contra evidence, or are willing to sit silently by while the 45th President and his allies make a series of false claims about 2020, you're good to go as an accepted member of the Republican Party.
If you won't lie about the election -- based on objective facts -- then you are booed or threatened with being thrown out of the GOP.
The Point: This isn't how political parties act. It's how cults (of personality) act. -

Joe Walsh Says Liz Cheney's Trump Woes Indicate 'You Have to Lie' to Be Viable in GOP

Former Republican congressman and presidential candidate Joe Walsh criticized the GOP amid rising tensions between Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney and other party leaders.
Former congressman Joe Walsh said Tuesday that Cheney’s issues with the party stemming from her criticism of Donald Trump indicates "you have to lie" to be viable in the GOP.
"Liz Cheney is going to lose her position in leadership. That's clear. It's a matter of days or a week or two," Walsh said. "She's going to be penalized for speaking the truth. I mean, think about that. Think about where the Republican Party is."
The remarks were made during an appearance on CNN's New Day on Tuesday. Walsh served Illinois in Congress from 2011 to 2013 and ran for the 2020 Republican nomination for president against Donald Trump.
"Think how surreal this is, right?" Walsh said. "To be viable in today's Republican Party, you have to lie. You have to commit to the big lie, the undemocratic lie that the 2020 election was stolen."
Cheney, the No. 3 House Republican, has become one of the Republican Party's most vocal opponents against Trump's baseless allegations that the 2020 election was riddled with widespread voter fraud.
She was one of 10 House Republicans to vote to impeach Trump on the charge of incitement of insurrection after the Capitol attack on January 6. After the vote, she was forced to fend off calls from some within the GOP to be removed from her position as conference chair.
On Monday, Cheney said at a conference in Georgia that we "can't whitewash what happened on January 6 or perpetuate Trump's big lie."
"The 2020 presidential election was not stolen," the congresswoman also wrote on Twitter earlier in the day. "Anyone who claims it was is spreading THE BIG LIE, turning their back on the rule of law, and poisoning our democratic system."
The comments sparked pushback from House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who said Tuesday that his caucus had concerns about whether Cheney could fulfill her duties as conference chair.
"I have heard from members concerned about her ability to carry out the job as conference chair, to carry out the message," McCarthy told Fox & Friends. "We all need to be working as one if we're able to win the majority. Remember, majorities are not given, they are earned. And that's about the message about going forward."
On Monday afternoon, Trump issued his own statement on the feud. The former president said it was "heartwarming" to see polling in Cheney's home state of Wyoming purportedly showing her with low approval ratings.
"She is so low that her only chance would be if vast numbers of people run against her which, hopefully, won't happen. They never liked her much, but I say she'll never run in a Wyoming election again!" Trump said. -

Pelosi mocks House GOP looking for 'non-threatening female' to replace Liz Cheney

Pelosi's office released a mock "help wanted" ad as talks of ousting Cheney from leadership increase amid GOP frustrations with her anti-Trump stance.
"Word is out that House GOP Leaders are looking to push Rep. Liz Cheney from her post as House Republican Conference Chair - their most senior woman in GOP leadership - for a litany of very Republican reasons: she won't lie, she isn't humble enough, she's like a girlfriend rooting for the wrong team, and more," the ad reads, referring to previous media reports about male Republican criticism of Cheney.
"So what exactly are House GOP Leaders looking for in a #3? Punchbowl AM got the scoop and, well, it's not surprising... they want a woman who isn't a 'threat' to them," the statement continued.
Punchbowl News reported on Tuesday that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and House Minority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) want Cheney's possible replacement to be "not only relentlessly on message, but also someone who does not pose a threat to them and their power."
There is also consensus among Republican leaders that Cheney's replacement would have to be a woman, according to Punchbowl.
The Wyoming Republican has been repeatedly critical of Trump, most recently slamming Trump - as well as anyone else parroting him - for repeating his false claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.
She also reportedly lambasted the former president at a donor retreat for inciting the deadly Jan. 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol.
McCarthy told "Fox & Friends" on Tuesday that members of the caucus are "concerned" with Cheney's ability to carry out her role as conference chair.
"There's no concern about how she voted on impeachment. That decision has been made. I have heard from members concerned about her ability to carry out the job as conference chair - to carry out the message," he said.
Allies of McCarthy have vowed to remove her from her post, and one GOP lawmaker has said the frustrations have reached a "boiling point." -
