Only in this instance they are triggering the creation of proteins so that your body can produce an antibody response. It is a chemical reaction. Your genes don't change at any point.

I'll find the article later but it showed that there were long, unique sequences in the viral DNA that were the same in both COVID and HIV and not found in others. it suggests that the virus was created by splicing components of other viruses together.
I suppose it could've been natural but it was a lot of proteins that matched exactly
