But yea police are kinda fucked up, they deal with fucked up shit day in day out too. It probably wears on them.
But yea no sympathy, if "you can fuck around" without any consequences, legal or otherwise then how would police enforce the law? with stern words?
Then again I had my ride disappeared on me by Them in an extra-legal way, but had i not made bad choices i wouldnt have confronted this aspect of society.
Uh, most of your dealings with police? Where do you live? What the fuck were you doing? I've hitchhiked across the country and never had a cop pull a gun on me. At most I've been kicked out of a town/followed by police for 2h till I left. that was pretty fucked tbh.
I'm not talking about fucking around without consequences. Again, look at it realistically. Chauvin doesn't keep his neck on Floyd. What's the worst that happens? Floyd gets up? Maybe assaults an officer? Then 3-4 guys tackle him. Get him in cuffs. Put him in the back. Book him. No murder/manslaughter. Nobody dies. Nobody riots over some dude assaulting an officer.
It wasn't like he had a gun or a knife out. He was an unarmed man against 3-4 men (I keep forgetting how many there were) with the ability to call for dozens of men for backup. Even if he had run away like... so what? Let them run away. Preserving life is more important than preserving justice. Do you agree?
It's not like he was a murderer. He didn't rape children. He just smoked meth and tried to pass off counterfeit money. Is that honestly so bad? Like, really? Who was he hurting? -

Originally posted by netstat do you think the dichotomy is between 'free' and paid content? was thinking about the problem of shitty online journalism recently and had the idea that it largely comes down to incentives, where 'free' publications want to churn out clickbait type bullshit that is quick, easy and epistemically irresponsible because this incentivises faster consumption, more clicks and therefore more potential advertising revenue, while people who are willing to pay for a subscription to something like the economist are more likely to want higher quality, more factually accurate investigative journalism and the writers aren't weighed down as much by the need to optimise around the publication's advertising strategy
Maybe indirectly but it comes down to the actual ability of the writers, vs "bloggers".
You know how I navigate free news articles I see on the web? I immediately hunt for and click on the source. It will take me to an outlet or scientific or academic source. If not, I hunt for the sources on that source and then click that. Eventually I enhancement down to a paper or something that I read myself and is usually what I actually need to inform myself. Even if I don't specifically understand all the figures, I can carefully read what the authors are conveying and see what they're actually trying to say better than most of the articles by "bloggers" that got me to it in the first place.
If you regularly read any scientific news or economics news articles on the internet, it will drive you to the brink of insanity how much "rephrase wikipedia basic definition" word count padding bullshit you see.
In fact often you will spot blatant falsehoods that you genuinely already know are wrong and betrays the author's utter lack of specific knowledge on the subject.
There are some shining examples even amongst free publications, such as Quanta Magazine for scientific news.
When I read a publication like The Economist, it is clear that the authors usually at least basically know their shit. I don't see too many stilted takes. They don't just blog summaries of some new papers, they will write a broader survey of rich topics that help you gain some basic understanding and set yourself up to do further research on your own with a solid relative foundation.
If you can get talented writers with actual knowledge of the subjects you're hoping to cover, the business model doesn't really matter. -

they couldnt fathom a map where the west isnt at the center of it like medieval peopople couldnt fathom a solar system where the earth isnt at the center of it.
thankfully galileo of these days are merely censored, instead of getting bbq-ed at the stake. -
