It genuinely affected my view of online communities and how moderation works, and I think that thinking was on the right track. Those toolkits are literally drama generators and don't solve shit. All it does is make the poster angrier and more belligerent, unless they just don't give enough of a shit in which case it makes them gradually less interested in using the site.
Sometimes that's good when you want a massively retarded faggot to leave but more often than not, it would be better if the person just stopped being an idiot and started posting normally and discussing stuff without being disruptive.
And you can basically never strike that balance with post removals and bans. Agreed, freedom of speech is paramount, the only exceptions being spam and carefully defined forms of disruption.
Keeping a community together is insanely difficult tho, with or without strict controls. as much as i loved totse and regretted choosing 4chan over it, it became a failed state, it fell apart, whatever held the fabric of that community fell apart. figuring out the kind of social nuance needed to keep it flourishing is a task nobody proved capable of.
i talked to jackketch a few months ago and he blamed the IRC chatroom as well as the drugs, saying all the mods would just engage in bitchfests and then spill the drama over to the forum which trickled down to the rest of the users.
im willing to have a serious discussion about this here or in another thread if anyone else is just as interested, but i have to insist on getting off the clearweb, its just not the place for us anymore. -
