What do you think of Chuck Palahniuk?

I've read two of his novels and while he has a great sense of humor and he knows how to write a compelling story, the problem is he can only really tell ONE story.
Cynical jerk meets damaged goods female, Chuck describes bomb recipes or whatever for a few hundred pages, cynical jerk faces impossible odds, beats the odds and gets the girl, the end. What do you think?

Survivor was a great read next to Fight Club but all the other stuff I like to pretend he didn't write. He has some very interesting anecdotes in most books but I feel his genius creativity is wasted on some of his inane plot lines as of late. I looked him up on Amazon to see if any of his new material was worth a read till I read the synopsis and thought, "Fuck that".

That's not true, read "survivor" "snuff" anything else really. I think what happened to his father is interesting too and seeing how it impacted his writing. Great author and a reason why I wish I read more.

Yeah then flies a plane till it runs out of fuel and crashes.

I did however find the anecdote amusing on what would have happened if Jesus died in a bathroom from a Heroin overdose.

Chuck posted some convoluted addendum about how Tender used one of the tape recorders on the plane to record the story that is played into the black box, and then he parachutes out and fertility uses her future predicting power to go pick him up when and where he lands, misleading everyone into thinking he'd died on the plane, which is foreshadowed in the story when Fertility tells him that if he thinks really hard he'll find a way out

I think Survivor was the beginning of the end for Palahniuk. He will never top Fight Club, nor will anyone else for that matter. My brain mourns till something else phenomenal comes about.

***SIGH*** indeed, however Fight Club also had convoluted bogus like how Marla's mom sends her bags of surplus lipo fat even though nobody would realistically do that, the movie handled that particular plot point better

The last book I read was a list of short stories, one of which was suppose to be one on a future Tyler Durden married to Marla. I couldn't find the story in the book and didn't question why. There was one on a sales company run by animals that was funny.

Anyways I think there's a comic or some shit, sequel to Fight Club if I remember.

Just started reading "Judgement Day". Dunno what to make of it yet. Sometimes I think if half the dog shit I've read in the past by other authors can get published then I could.

    Fuck, didn't §m£ÂgØL get published?

How did I only find this thread now? Survivor is one of my top three books, I thought he died on the plane though, that it was suicide because all the cult members had to kill themselves. What freaked me out was when I was 12, in science class they made us watch a video of a lady giving birth. Were they trying to do the same thing, make us associate sex with pain? I didn’t touch myself until I was 16 also never fingered myself, so I wonder if that’s why… I’m not asexual I just had a friend who worked in Ann Summers. Sorry for tmi.

Invisible monsters is second favourite. The ending of Snuff was unexpected. I didn’t like Fight Club as much and had to take a break after every chapter. My ex literally poured acid over her hand because she watched Fight Club too many times. Right now I’m reading Damned but think he got it wrong, the reason for pretty girls wanting to do ugly girls makeup, it’s not so they feel better about themselves, it’s about frustration that things can be easily fixed, lives improved, a kindness.

There’s too many favourite quotes to list but one is “Your heart is my piñata”.

It seems like snuff was designed to open up as many possible crazy scenarios as possible then build towards an unlikely one that was less fantastical but much better than any of the others and pretty sympathetic and truthful. I didn't really get the Semitic subtext at the time but I bet if I re read it I'd find alot of it

I remember when the kid who thought he was her son came up, I didn't believe hee when she said she wasn't his mom...and then he basically raped her, that was pretty balsy writing. That whole book seemed like it could have been from Garth Ennis' "preacher" (and a storyline from it has many similarities)

Do guys really wish porn stars were their mothers? I met a pornstar once, in a cafe, it was before we headed to a fetish club, before covid. It was weird in the cafe bcus they were talking about anal at full volume so others could hear. She said porn sex wasn’t good, that it was just acting. :/
