new laptop or battery?

though on a similar topic, most new laptop batteries aren't just a bunch of 18650s strapped together anymore, they're compact cells. Assuming I wanted to use those cells (ie. 14.8v) to power something else, how would I charge them outside of the laptop? Can I just use a regular hobby balance charger? -

yes..weld rather than solder...though I've done it with solder before by "roughening" up the contact surfaces first and then epoxying over the solder. As I say not pretty but it works. -

If you pop open the battery you usually find they're a bunch of flat cells. Each one is chargeable normally.
Messing around with lithium batteries is really stupid btw. I mean I do it, but it's still stupid. -

I would say you could..though I've not really messed with newer lithium ion batteries. The laptop batteries I'm most used to rebuilding have been NiMH, never messed with lithium ion ones...and probably wouldn't due to house burning down scenarios etc.
