It looks like joining the Russian federation is the only way forward for Donetsk/Lughansk but it's a geopolitical shitstorm Putin's been avoiding.
Crimea's been part of Russia for far longer than the Ukraine has existed as a state, and the only reason Ukraine even had stewardship of it was because Kruschev was drunk and stupid.
Turning Sevastopol into a NATO base was one of the key goals of that particular colour revolution -
