I don't want to give anyone idead but...

I've always wondered why terrorist, don't just go around to high voltage towers that carry the power lines into a city and knock them over. At least where i live they're not well guarded. They might have a fence around them but that's nothing a pair of bolt cutters can't handle. They have four supports that are anchored way down into the ground. But that doesn't even matter.

If i were to go ahead and cause mayhem i'd attach cutting shaped charges to two of the supports, then use high explosives in a standard configuration to go off a millisecond after the shaped charged go. As such the shaped charges will cut the metal supports and your regular charges will blast the metal framing away from the area that was just cut, at an upwards angle so that the tower loses the two supports simultaneously and gets knocked in the direction where you know you will put the most strain on the cabling on top.

Preferable the tower would fall forward in the direction of the next tower in line, in doing so the stress on the cables of the tower before that one will become so great that they snap. If you manage to identify a couple towers that bring most of the electricity into the city, and destroy them. Mayhem will ensue. Especially if you coordinate the blackout to occur with a couple run of the mill carbombs around emergency services headquarters, like the police stations, fire and medical response.

You don't even necessarily have to kill people just make it so emergency services are having a crisis right at the moment you blow the towers. It wouldn't even require a lot of money to pull off, and you would have effectively shut down a city. If you really want to create turbo mayhem you wait for emergency services from other parts of the state or province to be diverted to help in disaster relief, then go for some high profile targets like regional government headquarters and the like.

Just to be clear, i am not a terrorist, i do not intend to commit any crimes of any sort or encourage anyone to do so, but from a hypothetical strategical or tactical standpoint, this seems to me the way to go.

it'd be easier to hit substations I'd think - you could cut the huge eiffel-tower looking lines to a small town but I'd expect there's a good degree of redundancy for a city

I would expect a city to have some redundancies too, that's why i suggested knocking over more than one tower. the big towers come directly from the substations, and at least in my area the substations do have security. So by targeting the major towers you can do your dastardly deeds relatively safely, without much chance of being caught or getting into a shootout with security services before you have the chance to occupy them with disaster at their front doors.

You could also let the oil out of transformers.

And instead of knocking towers down you could short the wires out with steel cable.

You could also shoot out the insulators, though I doubt it would work unless you had a very big gun.

Which transformers? There's a couple down the line. From the power plant to the substations to the facilities where the high voltage comes into the city to the local grid with mini stations and boxes throughout the city. The mini stations are built like vaults. Concrete and thick steel doors. Now i have been educated in EE and worked repairs on the mini stations and city boxes, but boxes run blocks and mini stations sectors.

power can be restore in hours.

I wonder if you could take down a tower with some steel cable and a ratchet. Wrap the cable around the tower, and increase the tension until the supports buckle.

I am sure you could but it would require some serious machinery to pull off.

I bet you could do it by hand with sufficient leverage.

Well, maybe the biggest cities have these in case of disaster, but the smaller ones definitely don't where i'm at. Also, how much power would such a truck produce? As in how many households would it be able to provide electricity for?

    a few blocks.

only critical infrastructures like hospitals need them. households can wait or put on limited use. people are not going to revolt because they dont have electricity for a few days because of terror attack.

It's the power generators that are the most vulnerable, because it takes 10 years to build a new one.

Obviously the point wouldn't be to get the people to revolt. It would be a show of force, a demonstration of what the terror group is capable of. The terror group should make it clear that this is just a sample of the amount of chaos they can unleash unless their political demands are not met. Make the people afraid, make the government look powerless to stop the terror organization. Which would be made all the more clear by the simultaneous attacks that will make it so emergency services will be unavailable for a good amount of time as the crisis ensues.

They want to scare the population and government into doing their bidding. Often through violence and killing, but the terrorist's chief weapon is fear.
