    Absolutely not, you couldn't have picked a worse series for comparison than DBZ.
    
    The earlier anime is certainly full of filler and bad pacing as they tried to keep a rolling episode schedule regardless of the manga releases.
    
    There is a fan project @ OnePace.net where they chop off literally hundreds of episodes by re-editing to match the manga's pace.
    
    Definitely give it a go. Anyone with any kind of sense for good storytelling will like One Piece.
    
    Actually the best thing is to just read the manga, as awesome chapters like this have to be made a little more age appropriate for TV so become a little less impactful.
