The smartphone is our generation's light bulb. It's our automobile. It's the latest great invention that has changed the course of history forever.
Honestly, you're the last person that I would expect to shun a thread like this, especially considering where you live. Get with the time's, man.
The smart phone, at least as it exists today, is a fundamentally passive device. You don't build smart phones using smart phones, you build them using "desktop" computers. There is no real hobbyist mobile developer. Technological "progress" requires that it facilitate in some way further development but phones do not, they're an evolutionary dead end. Market forces produce new better phones every year, yes, but market forces also produce new better kitchen utensils but being new or representing a market demand does not make a thing meaningful technological progress. -

They're a consumer device, not a production device. In this role, smartphones definitely create and facilitate technological progress. It's not the Apollo missions but it's important. No you probably ably won't be programming TempleOS on your iCoon but that's not the point. The smartphone is the nexus of the most important technologies of the modern age; GPS, digital photography, cellular telecommunications, the internet, microcomputing, batteries. It integrates these technologies into our daily lives, and allows innovation and competition on multiple levels. Uber has become a big part of my life, and it's the sort of app that would simply not be nearly as useful if we were still sitting on dumbphones.
Centralisation is also a big one; instead of having to go to sketchywarez.ru to find a cool new applicatio that has like a 70% chance of giving your PC cyber AIDS, you just go to the Play Store or APK mirror. -

2017-02-16 at 6:34 AM UTCAww yeah niggers, transaction went off without a hitch. Only thing was that I has to take a 2 hour commute (one way) to land's end (of the line for BART/the train) Dublin. That place is fucking weird, at one point while walking you could suddenly see this immense number of houses that look damn near the same. Pretty unnerving, imagine what it would feel like to live there and just having this endless repetition as scenery *shudders* Well, if you're there there's probably either something wrong with you or your life. The buildings are also quite a lot bigger than usual for the core bay area, likely due to cheaper land prices, maybe regulations.
Received a nice leather case as well. Everything's in good condition. Oh, the back cover is cracked, as stated, but I don't care, there's no damage to anything important. I just finished installing the entire Gear VR/Oculus software on the phone, so I can finally say:

$200! What a steal. Will report back after I pop my VR cherry. Fun fact, the Note 5 actually has a higher res than the Oculus and Vive. Certainly not saying the Gear is overall better, but for viewing cinema and other video, cinematic heavy experiences, it can actually better.
Also found out there's a Quake game with an HD texture pack available that has online multiplayer.
I think I'm going to try watching Kizumonogatari 2 (film) in a virtual cinema.

2017-02-16 at 6:45 AM UTCCongratulations! That's a sick deal.
If you don't want to use a case (which is the way I roll), want to cover up the cracked back and also protect the phone as a whole, I would recommend dropping a little money to buy a skin (dbrand and Slickwraps both have really good ones) and a tempered glass screen protector (orzly are a really good brand). This approach retains the industrial design of the phone while protecting it just as (if not more) effectively as a case, and only adds minimal thickness, -
2017-02-16 at 8:39 AM UTCJust got done playing Face Your Fear Your Fears. The headset got really steamy during the clown story and I noped out of there afterward. Man, that is not my idea of fun. Dolls coming to life was actually one of my fears as a child. Didn't help that I was on my bed in a setup that felt similar to the one in the game.
