Timing belts and timing chains are one of those happy expenses that you have to deal with - after appropriate mileages.

My car isn’t even that old, but I’ve done the maintenance on it all along, except this stinking chain. I bet it gets to 200,000 mi. Body looks brand new.

what vehicle is it? you might be able to do the timing chain in situ. or, you might be able to save money by getting a 150 dollar harbor freight hoist and pulling the engine, which isn't as big of a deal as you might think, i could probably walk the average person through removing and installing a 4 cylinder engine, providing it can come out the top.

sometimes they start to rattle. fortunately they rattle for a long time before they break, if they do, which isn't guaranteed at all. you can probably just let it rattle almost forever. specific vehicles however we do know by experience require the chaintrain to be serviced despite everyones best intentions, we know this by experience. we do a lot of timing chain service on vehicles made between 2008 and 2014 due to a recall, the owners are reimbursed.

yeah, after looking at pictures online, i'm pretty certain that has to come out the bottom and you'd need a lift. you might be able to get it out the front if you took the entire front clip off (radiator, front bumper, fascia, etc) and had a little truck dolley jack thing . you better let a shop do that. it wouldn't be impossible i guess, i've pulled a motor with a fucking rope over a tree branch i parked the car under, but i don't think it's happening.
