cant type password in command line linux

   VNCd into a VPS which the host put ubuntu 18.04 on , it says

   ubuntu login:

   It has a blinking underscore for me to input text so I type in sudo and press return and it says

   Password:

   and has a blinking underscore like it wants me to type in a password however nothing appears when i type like it does for the login name..... the only thing that makes it do something is pressing return with nothing entered for password
   
   which then it tells me

   Login incorrect.

   then prompts me for login again....
   
   what da fuc why wont it let me put in a password this is why windows is so good

   I'm using VNC Viewer by Real VNC but I also tried a web-based VNC client that the server host makes available on their site and have the same result

   LOL it doesn't show the password even obfuscated as asterisks or dots like a normal person would want. just goes to show the audacity of security they have. doesn't help that i can't paste text from my lappy into the vnc window and the default password is like 30 characters of nonsense shit and you can't even watch the screen to make sure you typed each character in

   putty says cause it's first time connecting to server there can be a hacker jacker spoofing and i oughta confirm if its really the right server by verifying the ssh key fingerprint. i can't find the ssh key anywhere on host's config pages do i have to call them to get it

    how do i confirm that putty is reporting the correct ssh key fingerprint for the server?
    
    i connected with VNC again and did

    ssh-keygen -lf /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key.pub.

    and the key it tells me is not the one putty reports. it's also not presented in the same format, putty reports one that looks like hexadecimal ( numbers and letters up to F )
    
    and the ubuntu calls the key a 2048 SHA256 and it has numbers and letters up to z
