This. It won't help at all for healthy people, if you are exposed you will probably get infected, it's basically a matter of breathing, but for coughers it will help reduce the spread in the air because the mask catches it... All the healthy people doing it are taking it away from the ones who should be wearing them, as supplies are limited. -

So masks don't work, and we need to save them for the ones who should be wearing them? -

You still need masks for regular medical reasons, like dentists wear them to not get splashed by their drill, and for actually sick people to wear.
Currently the approach is not to stop the virus but to slow it down enough to where the medical systems are not overloaded and the severely afflicted can be treated. Those who are infected are the worst carriers. -

You dodged the question: masks either help slow transmission or they don't.
If they help, even by a tiny amount, then recommending against their use is twisted. -

I didn't dodge shit, you just have garbage athletic abilities.
- If you are not sick, having it on your face won't stop it from getting in your face because it's literally in the moisture in the air expelled from people's lungs.
- If you are sick, the mask will catch a portion of the moisture as you cough and break the momentum of the wind from your nose and mouth and marginally help reduce its spread.
- Medical professionals need masks for a billion reasons other than not breathing in the virus. And in some severe cases like in China. It's too late and the doctors are infected too, but they still wear n95s and regular masks to slow their own transmission inside medical facilities.
Basically it is as useful as a tissue elasticed to your face, better than nothing if you are sick, literally useless if you aren't. -

What the fuck?
Masks help. Advising against their use is psychopathy. -

It doesn't help healthy people stay healthy. It helps sick people keep from getting others sick.
Compressing it into "masks help, saying no mask = PSYCHO" because your brain cannot juggle 2 bits of information at the same time is retardation, and not my responsibility to fix. -
2020-03-13 at 9:32 AM UTCUmmm yeah they help. That’s why we were fitted for N95 masks yesterday, and right on time. We had 4 suspected Covid-19 patients yesterday.. They absolutely stop particulate matter.

2020-03-13 at 9:43 AM UTCOh, guess I wasn’t following. Even then, the fitting process was very extensive. If it’s not fitted properly, there’s gaps around the outside that let the particles in.

"Don't wear that mask you have, masks only protect us, not you" -
2020-03-13 at 10:18 AM UTCThe regular surgical masks let in too many droplets. You need a mask that stops fine droplets.
People keep trying to steal our surgical masks, we had to put them out of sight.
Education about all this is key. -
2020-03-13 at 10:28 AM UTCI’m kinda pissed though. I wouldn’t be surprised if I’ve already been exposed. We had some people in the last week that were symptomatic.
I’m not a fucking victim, and many have it far worse than me, but it doesn’t stop me from being pissed that if I get it, I won’t be having my last surgery in this reconstruction in 12 days. -

Of course you should get a proper mask.
However can anyone explain how regular surgical masks stop droplets when breathing out, but not when breathing in?
That is some weird science. -
2020-03-13 at 10:34 AM UTCIt goes both ways. It doesn’t stop particles completely all the way on either side.

2020-03-13 at 10:39 AM UTCI’m dreading today. As crazy as it was yesterday, it’s only gonna get worse😔
I wish they’d just shut the city down.
