    most important is knowing how to use the stuff. that being the case, everything can be improvised. no, its not sterile, but thats what injectable antibiotics are for. bleeding out is slightly more pressing of a concern than potential infection.

    shoelaces...belt...straps...seatbelt...plastic bag or any sort of flexible plastic or impermeable flexible material...any matter of clothing can be used for first aid, wound packing, blood-vessel constriction.

    edit: i forgot to mention that regular cloth can be used as a chest-seal if its soaked in bodily fluids and moderate pressure applied, without applying too much to interfere with chest cavity expansion...or jamming a rib fragment into somewhere soft and juicy.
