- someone else would always pick up the phone, disconnecting the connection
- there was no such thing as free long distance. any phone calls made outside the borough in NYC that i lived in were long distance.
the first 'computer' call i made was in the 70s to a doctors office using a dial-up phone, with a 7-character phone number where the first two characters were letters...using a 'modem' that literally cost as much as an average priced car.
