materials costs are virtually irrelevant. there is more to making that final product than just a lump of aluminie-yum. the labor and equipment required for him to do what he did with that slab of scrap aluminum is more than it would be possible to sell that thing for on the open market.
you know what PVC pipe fittings are? for one that is 2" diameter, those things start out as pallet-sized crates of tiny plastic beads that costs about the equivalent of approximately .001 cent per fitting...yet they sell for about 50-cents for a cheap one.
