My doctor couldn’t help her, she’d already been tested.

I think you're being a little rough on the girl, if you work in a medical field, say as a nurse in a nursing home. You'll know what you know and you'll have a general concept of the gap in knowledge between you and a doctor. So as an authoritative figure to her, she just did what her doctor told her.
