2019-03-12 at 2:46 AM UTC in Theists of NIS, why do you believe?I am a theist of sorts.
Here is my logic.
If the universe is eternal, it suffers from the problems of infinite regress. If it had a first moment, then it suffers from the problems of the uncaused cause.
In what sort of scenario is existence possible while needing to worry about neither of these issues?
Imagine simulating a universe where the only elements are a particle that moves from the left to the right and collides with a wall.
An observer inside this universe might ponder as to how this strange universe came to be: if the particle was coming from infinity, why now this brick wall, and how did it cover the infinite distance between it and this wall? And if indeed the particle popped into existence from some arbitrary point, why? Why there and nowhere else? Why this particle? What structures this first event? But as the programmer of the simulation, I can simply set the particle to appear at some arbitrary position and internally it would be indistinguishable whether or not I did so, or if the particle came from infinity.
I think so too is the nature of our universe. -
2019-03-12 at 2:33 AM UTC in Go back to 4:3 laptops16:9 laptops are fucking retarded.
The 16:9 video watching normie audience has moved on to tablets and phablets.
Laptops are now once again productivity devices, or even if you're web browsing, you likely are doing so on a laptop rather than your phone or my ass because you want a desktop experience.
A 4:3 screen will give you more vertical space in a similar footprint. You also have more Z axis space on the lower half, so you can put more functionality, squarer keys and a larger trackpad, and maybe even include a trackpoint setup. You will be able to see more vertical information while browsing niggasin too.
Stop making faggot ass chiclet keyboards. Stop making 16:9 screened laptops. -

Well it doesn't really help solve the hard problem in any way. I think maybe there is some abstract analogy to the truth in it due to the nature of information structures but ultimately you have to imagine how it boils down to particles bumping together. Proposing some new conceptual space doesn't really help the problem. -

The idea isn't a universe identical to ours except there's no consciousness, it's a universe that's physically identical, but different otherwise. Pretty much everyone agrees that an explanation of why experience is some way and not some other involves the physical facts of the world, but there also seems to need to be some law or principle that governs why physical facts, and which physical facts, give rise to experience and which particular experience. It's this which you're asked to consider is different in a zombie-world.
What I'm saying is that it's not conceivable that there is another universe physically identical to ours, which doesn't also include consciousness. You seem to be proposing some kind of property dualism. Why do you believe that there needs to be something extra that composes conscious experience? I think our current understanding of maths and physics already gives us everything we need to derive what it would take to make an information system conscious. The problem is how everything goes together. -

Who perceives the illusion, faggot -
2019-03-10 at 5:21 PM UTC in The Hard Problem of ConsciousnessI don't think a philosophical zombie is conceivable in a functional sense. All you have to concede is that if there is an explanation for why a particular experience is the way it is rather than some other way. What does it mean to actually have a conscious experience? If something behaves in that way in a mechanical sense, then that is what it means to have that experience. So I don't think there is a way to conceive of a universe identical to ours but minus conscious experience.
Lanny, read I Am A Strange Loop by Doug Hofstadter. Information structures can have some very interesting properties that, in a complicated relationship, could probably be conscious, or at least think they are conscious... At which point, what is the difference?
