Money is a technical term, and synonymous with the supply and retraction in credit supply - banks lending out money, businesses allowing each other time to pay, people buying stuff on credit, government and corporate issuance of bonds, as well as coins and notes are all forms of money. It's complex but easy to comprehend, though most people don't have a fucking clue.
I found Galbraith's "Money: Whence It Came, Where It Went" a fairly good introduction, and it's fairly readable as well thanks to Galbraiths humor and amusing realistic cynicalness. You can find pdf copies pretty easily. -
