A little spontaneity here and there.

2024-10-29 at 10:11 PM UTC in PGP encryption (for the dummies)howdy. i'm going to teach y'all something that will enhance your privacy online and protect unseen adversaries from intercepting and reading your private messages! it's called PGP encryption :)
1. if you are on windows go here and click the big green button: https://www.gpg4win.org/download.html
mac users: https://gpgtools.org/
linux: https://apps.kde.org/kleopatra/
2. click next until the installation is complete. now you should have a new application on your computer called kleopatra (or GPGtools for mac users)
3. open up kleopatra and go up to the toolbar and click file, then clik new OpenPGP key pair. now it will prompt you for a username and email. you don't have to put an email address, this is optional. type in a password (you will be prompted for this password every time you want to decrypt any messages so don't forget it)
4. next click advanced options. make sure the box RSA is checked and change the key length to 4096. the extra key length will make it more resistant to being broken by the chinks. you can also set an expiration date if you want. click okay.
5. after a few seconds your new key pair will be generated. now in order for other people to encrypt messages for you, they will need your public key. right click on the key you just made (certificate) and click export. select a download path of your choosing and the file will be saved. open it in your text editor and it will look something like
-----BEGIN PUBLIC PGP BLOCK--------
SDGOIDSJGSOIDGJ
]DGFSJGOISDAJGPIADSGJDSA
GSJGAPOS'IGJSIPAGAJ
-----END PUBLIC PGP BLOCK----------
but longer. this is what you need to give your friends and also copy and paste it into the account settings here on niggasinspace.
IMPORTING SOMEONE ELSES PUBLIC KEY
your friend bradley gives you their public key. what should you do with it? go to kleopatra, click notepad and paste the public key into the text box. click import notepad. their key will be imported and you will need to certify it with one of your own keys (certificates) check the box and click okay.
now say you want to write a message that only bradley can read. go to the notepad, write your message. click on the recipients tab and uncheck the box that says SIGNING AS, and check the box that says encrypt for me, and the box that says encrypt for others. in the other box type in your friends name bradley and click the sign/encrypt notepad button. you will need to type your password in if you set one.
then in the notepad you will see something like
-------BEGIN PGP MESSAGE--------
GORAGJFOPIGFJASG
FGJHOIAJGFOIGK
AFGJIAOOGJOIRFJG
--------END PGP MESSAGE---------
send this to bradley and he will be able to decrypt it, nobody else :) unless he fucked up and shared his secret key and password with an adversary which i don't feel like getting into because typing is hurting my wrists now. :) -

I mean, she hasn't been the president yet, but... yes? Nobody really made a peep about her vice presidency (until she was the presumptive candidate replacing Biden and there was political incentive to do so). The most eventful part of the Biden presidency was Trump failing to pull off a coup d'état. Aside from covid, I guess - a problem which Biden inherited from Trump, and from which no leader's reign was safe. -

Nah, I suspect her presidency will be pretty uneventful. I think most people understand this. Big part of why she'll win. -

2024-10-10 at 10:27 PM UTC in The internet archive/waybackmachine being destroyed forever is a good thingThe permanent loss of the Internet Archive/Wayback Machine could be seen as a natural outcome of market forces. According to the principles of market dynamics, if data is lost, it wasn't valuable enough to preserve in the first place—otherwise, the market would have ensured its survival. The idea of 'lost media' is a misnomer; it isn't that the data is irretrievable, but rather that the market moves at a pace that outstrips any incentive to physically store all information.
In this view, preservation is unnecessary. Without a profit-driven incentive to keep data alive, it will inevitably vanish, and that is simply the natural order of things. Any preservation model based on donations or goodwill is destined to fail—not if, but when. If something truly matters, the market will provide a mechanism to save it; if not, it will disappear, and we shouldn’t mourn its loss

media is not timeless but technology is and new media can be created from what is around. I would rather save as much potential as possible than see any shadow of the former world.
I would even seek out and destroy all film and television and make a computer virus that deletes it and put a copy on every CD-ROM with free operating systems I give out for free in my trade so it spreads far and wide, hopefully.
All classical works and cultural arts are useless to preserve except for historical purposes. -

Statement of H.E. Ettore Balestrero, Permanent Observer to the United Nations and Other International Organizations in Geneva
to the Second Session of the 2024 Group of Governmental Experts (GGE) on Emerging Technologies in the Area of Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS)
General Exchange of Views
Geneva, 26 August 2024
Mr. Chair,
At the outset, please allow me to thank you for all the preparatory work that you have conducted in advance of this second session of the Group of Governmental Experts (GGE). In particular, my Delegation wishes to thank you for the “rolling text” that you have provided, which constitutes a valuable foundation upon which to build a shared understanding.
Speaking to the G7 leaders gathered in Italy last June, Pope Francis urged them to “reconsider the development and use of devices like the so-called “lethal autonomous weapons” and ultimately ban their use. This starts from an effective and concrete commitment to introduce ever greater and proper human control. No machine should ever choose to take the life of a human being.”[1]
For the Holy See, given the pace of technological advancements and the research on weaponization of artificial intelligence, it is of the utmost urgency to deliver concrete results in the form of a solid legally binding instrument and in the meantime to establish an immediate moratorium on their development and use. In this regard, it is profoundly distressing that, adding to the suffering caused by armed conflicts, the battlefields are also becoming testing grounds for more and more sophisticated weapons.
Mr. Chair,
This Delegation supports your approach to analyze the potential functions and technological aspects of autonomous weapon systems. Identifying those systems that are wholly or partially incompatible with IHL and other existing international obligations, could be of great benefit in adequately characterizing the systems under consideration in order to establish prohibitions and restrictions accordingly, while taking into account broader ethical considerations.
For the Holy See, autonomous weapons systems cannot be considered as morally responsible entities. The human person, endowed with reason, possesses a unique capacity for moral judgement and ethical decision-making that cannot be replicated by any set of algorithms, no matter how complex.[2] Therefore, this Delegation appreciates the references to both “appropriate control” and “human judgement” in your rolling text, although we would welcome more clarity and common understanding of these terms.
In this regard, it is useful to recall the difference between a “choice” and a “decision”. While pointing out that machines merely produce technical algorithmic choices, Pope Francis recalled that “human beings, however, not only choose, but in their hearts are capable of deciding. A decision is what we might call a more strategic element of a choice and demands a practical evaluation […] Moreover, an ethical decision is one that takes into account not only an action’s outcomes but also the values at stake and the duties that derive from those values.”[3]
Mr. Chair,
The Holy See deems it of fundamental importance to retain references to human dignity and ethical considerations at the core of our deliberations. It is necessary “to ensure and safeguard a space for proper human control over the choices made by artificial intelligence programs: human dignity itself depends on it.”[4]
In this regard, this Delegation welcomes the prominent role given to ethical considerations at the recent conference “Humanity at the Crossroads: Autonomous Weapons Systems and the Challenge of Regulation” which was held in Vienna on 29-30 April 2024. This and other similar conferences on the same subject are further indications of an ever-growing awareness of the ethical concerns raised by the weaponization of AI. Such public awareness represents a remarkable, ever-growing “conscience publique” that cannot be ignored.
In conclusion, the development of ever more sophisticated weapons is certainly not the solution. The undoubted benefits that humanity will be able to draw from the current technological progress will depend on the degree to which such progress is accompanied by an adequate development of responsibility and values that place technological advancements at the service of integral human development and of the common good [5].
Thank you, Mr. Chair.
