It costs nothing to them and it leaves a nice impression to the clientele about the place. This couple would be more inclined to return to that place because the service was good, for example. It's a win win situation.

yea, whenever i'm at a restaurant with that guy i try to make it as clear as possible to the wait staff that i am not endorsing his behavior, by being extra polite, in hopes they don't spit in my food too
