They require a higher spiritual fortitude, it is a product of modern technology and to understand it you have to have a knowledge of drug chemistry. I think before you take anything like cocaine and heroin you should do a lot of research and appreciate how potent they can be.
I've never really had a problem with either of those substances. It's very easy to go overboard which is just the nature of the drug. People say they don't ever go near it because they've seen peoples lives ruined because of it. That fear is very real, but it's just a chemical compound. It can't do anything except just sit there until someone takes it.

Your world view is incorrect. I have lived in a rural area and on Saturdays walked through the outdoor farmer market on my way to work and I knew a lot of the people that sold stuff there. They were real family farmers packaging their stuff.
They even had artisan soaps. Locally produced honey and chocolates. I live in a city now and haven't been to the farmer market here but I imagine it's probably similar to what you describe.
But probably not to that extent. There are plenty of rural communities around the greater Toronto area. I guess you American city slickers don't have that luxury of farm to table
