I haven't heard of any state actors doing that, it leaves too much of a window for the device to be found. Typically they seem to prepare the site a few days in advance at the most -
2020-08-05 at 6:42 AM UTC in Massive and aesthetic ANFO explosion at Beirut PortI'd doubt there will be any conclusive evidence unless there are security cameras there that store data offsite. 1300 or so kilos of explosive do a good job of making evidence disappear

2020-08-05 at 6:36 AM UTC in Massive and aesthetic ANFO explosion at Beirut PortYeah I was thinking of making a thread about that.
There were rumours that israel was trying to kick off a war before the US election because they didn't want to risk doing it if Trump was out of office, but I dismissed them as dumb because Biden is likely to be just as pro-israel as Trump is.
Given the scale of sabotage in Iran and the uptick in attacks on Syria, they do appear to be trying to provoke a response. If this was actually an attack and not an accident, it will be taken very seriously because the explosion destroyed a lot of food reserves and crippled the port where 80% or so of it comes into the country (Lebanon produces very little domestically). They were already suffering from shortages. -

Originally posted by Speedy Parker I really am not interested in what the Chinese perspective is. Even if he does accurately portray it. No more than I am interested in the perspective of a 12th-century serf in feudal Europe. IF you gave the latter a shit free place to sleep, two heaping bowls of porridge, a half a chicken, some root vegetables, a warm fire, and a few pints of mead at the end of a 10-hour workday they would think they were living high on the hog. My perspective is a bit different. So if you want to think that the average modern Chinese citizen has it so good why do you think they are not allowed to just leave whenever they want without fear of anything happening to their loved ones left behind?
these sort of assumptions are why you need a Chinese perspective to give you a balanced idea of what really goes on. -

But I guess if you call the condidtion in most modern Chinese factories "out of poverty" we really have nothing more to discuss on this topic.

Originally posted by Speedy Parker Except that is not the correct answer. The correct answer is deregulation, fair trade agreements, and enforcing tarrifs on the chineese market to balance the trade deficiet and bring manufacturing back too the US. The proof that your response is not correct is that for the first time in almost 10 years the median wage hs seen a significant increase in the last four years.
I'd be interested to see how those stats are calculated - unless they account for outliers it could be like GDP growth, ie. the richest people and corporations push the numbers up even as more and more people fall into poverty.

The real unemployment rate appears to be around 30% at the moment, and more people past retirement age are back in the workforce, largely in low-skilled jobs that are traditionally held by teenagers -

As opposed to the 850 million or so Chinese that have been lifted out of poverty since Mao's reforms? -
2020-08-05 at 3:42 AM UTC in Universal Health CareI've always believed some primary industries should be state-controlled to provide vital products and services (ie. medical, maybe grain farming, mass transit etc.) with the goal of providing the best services at the lowest prices possible and at a stable rate without regard for profits or the interests of shareholders.
It becomes difficult in a mixed economy though, considering state-run industries would still need suppliers and support from private industry which opens the door to more exploitation so it's hard to say whether it'd even end up having the intended effect -

underemployment + skewed definition of 'unemployment' that leaves out 'discouraged workers'
