You're MUCh better off just weaning off with the alcohol than getting addicted to a whole new drug. Yeah, it's 'the same part of the brain' but you have to give evolution some credit and realize the brain is not as simple as your quick google makes it out to be. Gabapentin is useful for alcohol wd but you shouldn't use it to taper off. If you want to switch to gabapentin that is a different story and definitely better for your body. But there's no reason not to just use alcohol for an alcohol taper.
the reason benzos are used is mostly just so that you can stay functional; something like valium or even clonazepam are both longer-lasting and easier to accurately dose (and hence taper) -
