Because a lot of religious text is written in the standpoint of perceptions that were totally unsure of what they were seeing in reality. I think most are highly metaphorical in content and stand ambiguously for other things.

I never posted on NIRVANA net or &T but i lurked heavily. it was back in a time when the text files where proudly displayed on the front page for every young mind to taint themselves with. I actually didn't even know the original totse had a forum functionality and thats why I never posted or was a part of it. Then magically, user Static Tim got me roped into the very humble beginnings of &T2, then all the shit disolved several times, and last night i got really bored and wanted to see if any originals still existed on any splinter sites.
