I would always laugh at how the birds did things

first the scout bird would do a fly by
then it would land nearby for a second, then fly away again
then it would come back and land a bit closer, but only for a second
then they land next to the food and fly away again
if nothing happens, the bird comes back and starts eating, and all the other birds come
its pretty funny
Also an air gun would do very well.
Another idea is gether the following items:
1 very strong rubber band
1 hollow bic pen tube
Some skewer sticks for kabobs and shit
Now what you do is create a slinging device by pinching the rubber band at one end of the tube so the band is doubled over itself running along two sides leaving an opening in the front and the middle of the rubber band should be tight against the back of the pen.
Load it up with a skewer pull back and let er rip. I made some pretty dangerous spear guns back in gradeschool with this method which went through multiple layers of cardboard and with a little practice you can get very accurate. -
