The Roman historian Pliny the Elder (23-79 A.D.) wrote about soap-making in his Natural History, and there is evidence that the Romans produced soap on a large scale. Roman soaps were made from tallow (animal fat) and ashes, and were used for both cleaning the body and laundry.
Too bad that didn't have Wikipedia. They could have found out about their soap and not had to use the knife and olive oil. -
