   The ironic part is most botting platforms have autocaptcha built in so if you are spamming the forum it's likely you will never touch a captcha while a new user is slowed down by them which is the opposite of entire point of captcha in the first place

    They do, but it costs something. Not a lot, but it can work as a limited deterrent. Or maybe I should go the SA route and charge $10 to sign up. It'll go to the Africans as well, I promise

    Even Xenforo forums have to close registrations sometimes so it's not like this is completely unique to this forum and it's perfectly understandable that you've gone the route you have as a developer for long term solutions that work and don't require fucking with.
    
    It's an unfortunate cost of the modern internet that not even old skool BBS like realitychecks are free from as they have to IP block entire countries to prevent abuse
