Russian authorities say they think it was caused by a birdstrike on initial inspection
this video appears to show shrapnel damage to the tail section, indicating it was hit with a small, maybe man-portable missile or drone (things like the S200 or BUK-M2 punch much bigger holes):
short of the damage being caused on the ground by an explosion outside the plane, I can't think of anything that'd cause damage like that outside of a weapon -

That's machine gun damage. -
2024-12-27 at 6:28 PM UTCdoubt it, the top ones are too small and they don't look like they came from a consistent angle

the entire explanation given by russian government doesnt make sense.
they said the plane was denied permission to land but then said the plane have tried to land twice unsuccessfully.
if it was denied landing then why were there earlier attempts to land ? was the plane denied to land at the said airport after it failed to land ?
needs further penetration. -

I believe they were denied permission to land at Grozny because of Ukrainian drone attacks so they diverted to Aktau, where they tried to land twice but failed due to poor weather before going down.
passengers reported hearing an explosion just before the plane went down so whatever happened happened close to Aktau and was unrelated to what was going on at Grozny.
maybe a MANPAD fired from near the airport, or from the sea? seems unlikely it was Russian anti-air because it's so far from the danger zone, does not appear to be a direct hit, and the holes are small enough that it would've had to have been one of those PANTSIR anti-drone missiles or something. -

Putin offered an apology for the fact that an incident “took place in Russian airspace,” adding that it occurred during a Ukrainian drone raid, which was being repelled by air defenses.
“The Azerbaijani passenger plane, which arrived on schedule, made repeated attempts to land at the airport in Grozny,” the statement said. The capital of Russia’s Chechen Republic, as well as other cities in the region, “were being attacked by Ukrainian combat drones at the time, and Russian air defences were repelling those attacks.”
implication is that it was damaged by anti-air near Grozny but it was only minor damage that didn't cause a major failure (by the way the plane was jerking up and down consensus seems to be that the hydraulic system failed) until it reached Aktau -

Investigation is still ongoing but Azeri President more or less confirms:In a Sunday interview with the state-run broadcaster AzTV, Aliyev claimed that the aircraft “was damaged from the outside on Russian territory, near the city of Grozny, and almost got out of control.”
